Boy was I ever Humbled............... by hardened criminals

Recently I was invited to serve as a judge for a unique program for inmates at a nearby prison unit.  This is a program designed to teach hardened criminals about becoming useful businessmen and ultimately a positive asset to society.  It is faith-based and is life transforming.    It was developed by an amazing young woman. I cannot tell you how humbled I was by these inmates and their ability to sell me on their new legitimate  business plan.. and life mission. My overall rating of their skills was very high.   Look at the website and look at the smiles and tell me God isn't there.  Currently there are about 40 to a class. It is like boot camp . They study hard and work with CEO's and MBA's.   The return rate to prison is tiny for these grads.  The requirements are rigid. The cost of the program vs. the cost of interment over the long haul ..Well there is no comparison.  And mostly it is supported by donations. Watch for this program. It is really taking off.

I listened to a grad who had just been released after 14 years.  He brought tears and tight throats to nearly everyone in the room...40 inmates and 35 business men and women.  He said all he had worldly was the suit on his back and the 100$ the state gives you. But he now had something greater... his faith and the true love from all the strangers in the room that had helped him... plus the knowledge, skills and motivation to find real and useful work.

Take a look and read about the program!       http://www.prisonentrepreneurship.org/

Trey- sounds like a great program.  As an ex-police officer I know there are many programs out there like this that make a difference, but usually funding them is a problem, and societies wishes to "punish" makes it difficult to get them started.  Glad to hear about your experience.  There are some very intelligent and productive people locked up today, but in some cases I hate to say it but it took that experience to become the new person they are.

Jason, You are right  about their intelligence. I witnessed an inmate out- debate a seasoned CEO of a large corporation and convince him to buy his product taboot! Take a llook at the link.

I actually thought this was going to be a post about something bad that had happened to you, Trey......

I am glad this is something GOOD!

Trey, Kudos to you for being a part of such an important ministry. If enough people get involved we can turn the tide in this country  and reach a new level of greatness.

What an awesome program, and I'm glad to see that it is a ministry - with God all things are possible, even the rehabilitation of those who society has given up on. God Bless You!

We are called by the Word to visit and minister to those in prison...yours is a great example of this I have bookmarked this Blog and website describing this program to pass on to our local prison minister - not sure if we have something like this implemented here in NW IN but it's worth looking into - thanks for posting this and

God Bless You

The words of our Lord "when I was in prison you visited me" come alive right now! We serve a God of second chances! It blesses my heart to see the time spent on reforming these prisoners and educating them to be productive citizens. Keep up the great work! A feature in Spiritual Rain

Diane

Good news and bad news. I found out they are moving the program , I believe they said to Cleveland Texas, where there is a much larger facility, thus enabling them to educate a larger population....looks like the program is growing.  I won't drive to Cleveland but I hope to continue monetary support and maybe do something locally along the same lines. You are so right about a God of second chances.

As a retired Correction Captain, for many years I experienced very close contact with those who are incarcerated. One thing I became aware of very quickly was the level of intelligence some of the prisoners have. When they decided to set positive goals, the results can be truly amazing. This program teaches them to set positive goals.

That is what makes it so good.  I for one hope it takes off.

Trey, outreaches like this are truly valuable.  You have no idea how someone else is going to touch you and really make a difference in your life.  You think you are there to help others, but alot of times God has us there to help us too.  Some of us are full of ourselves, thinking we are going to make a difference in someone elses life, when in reality, they were put in our path to help change us.  God puts us all in each others paths for a reason.  We can learn just as much,  if not more, than they will ever learn from us.  It is great that God is using you in such a great way.  May God bless you all with great success and lives being saved.  God Bless.

Trey, I think it is wonderful that you are involved with prison ministry. These people are worth a second chance in life. True what was mentioned earlier that Jesus said "I was in prison and you visited me". God bless you.

I have to tell you I got a thankyou card today from an inmate who is being released.  He said" It gives me a wonderful feeling within to know I am even woth it"    I agreed to help sponsor one inmate for  basic expenses in getting started again in life , bus fare, meals for a short while at halfway house. The men  have reached the bottom.  Who else will hold out a hand?  Maybe God uses our hand to do so.

Trey, YOu are a great person to do this, when most would run and hide, out of fear.  You are doing a God given thing.  As Jesus said, 'to the least of these ...you are doing this to me'.  My father use to go to prisons and do that.  I have hired 3 different guys, simi fresh out of prison, over the last 5 years.  2 of the 3 have made me proud.  1 is still working for me. God sent him to me and put it on my heart to hire him.  I would not have done this in the natural, but God knew how Cedric would touch my life and become a real friend.  God put him here for more then to help Ced, it was to help me.  May God bless you with so much more than you could ever give out.  What a blessing to get a thank you card.  Peace be with you, my brother.

Great story Trey.  I was a Probation Officer for 5-years, we can't just give up on these people.  Sure, there are some that nobody can help, but there are many that want help.  It sounds like a good program.  Thanks for sharing.

People Want to succeed in life Some just never believe they can and when somone takes the time to tell them they can and how  they can amazing things happen. Looks like a great program.

Criminals invest a lot of time and thought into their particular illegal niche or trade - if they now apply this drive as Christians laborers and businessmen in a legal pursuit the results can be astounding.

I work with Teen Challenge and see those results.

Recently we attended their graduation program (discussed in another blog). Well today I got about 12 thank you cards from some of those graduates. It is hard after reading them to believe that it isn't making a difference.

Trey, thanks for the heads up on this positive program. I think it really shows God working through people in the world. We should never give up on anyone. I love the smiles in the photo.

Gary , they have moved the program to another facility in Texas so I won't be able to physically do much but I plan on donating and am thinking about helping in other ways in the prison .

A very positive in a usually negative setting.   Thanks for sharing.  It helps bring home the point: we are all God's children.

Connie,

You know I think about how hard it is to forgive sometime, especially so for murderers and thieves. But then you think about the man on the cross next to Christ. We don't always have to let them out of prison , but as hard as it is we have to forgive. And if things had been different that could be you or me behind bars.
