Recently I was invited to serve as a judge for a unique program for inmates at a nearby prison unit. This is a program designed to teach hardened criminals about becoming useful businessmen and ultimately a positive asset to society. It is faith-based and is life transforming. It was developed by an amazing young woman. I cannot tell you how humbled I was by these inmates and their ability to sell me on their new legitimate business plan.. and life mission. My overall rating of their skills was very high. Look at the website and look at the smiles and tell me God isn't there. Currently there are about 40 to a class. It is like boot camp . They study hard and work with CEO's and MBA's. The return rate to prison is tiny for these grads. The requirements are rigid. The cost of the program vs. the cost of interment over the long haul ..Well there is no comparison. And mostly it is supported by donations. Watch for this program. It is really taking off.
I listened to a grad who had just been released after 14 years. He brought tears and tight throats to nearly everyone in the room...40 inmates and 35 business men and women. He said all he had worldly was the suit on his back and the 100$ the state gives you. But he now had something greater... his faith and the true love from all the strangers in the room that had helped him... plus the knowledge, skills and motivation to find real and useful work.
Take a look and read about the program! http://www.prisonentrepreneurship.org/
Trey- sounds like a great program. As an ex-police officer I know there are many programs out there like this that make a difference, but usually funding them is a problem, and societies wishes to "punish" makes it difficult to get them started. Glad to hear about your experience. There are some very intelligent and productive people locked up today, but in some cases I hate to say it but it took that experience to become the new person they are.
