Ever wonder some things you can do with your pumpkin ? Well in Madiscon Wisconsin people don't just take giant pumpkins to the fairs. They also take them to the water ! Every fall, people race pumpkin boats on a lake in Wisconsin. The pumpkins are grown just for the race.

This event is cosponsored by the Hoofers Sailing Club and the UW Horticulture Department, whose students grew the oversize marine pumpkins. The crafts' sleek racing lines and formidable bulk suggested they might have been descendants of Charlie Brown's Great Pumpkin...

If we move on over to Half Moon Bay, California, people join each year in the fun and festivities of the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-off ! Check out 2007 winner :

weighing a record 1,524 pounds.

Ok Melissa, now I've heard everything...imagine, pumpkin canoes. Who would've guessed?

Some of those pumpkins would make SERIOUS pies! Mmmmmm.

Who was the first to actually decide to make a boat out of a pumpkin and what were they thinking!

LOL..this is too funny!How do they float?I would think with the weight of the person..they would sink...LOL

I too wondered who thought of sitting in a pumpkin in water and having a race?

Just how did that conversation start...you know Joe, I've been thinkin 'bout them pumpkins, let's see if they float with us in it? Did they just maybe have too much spiced cider in them? Anyway, thanks for these and those are mighty big pumpkins :)

BLR - From what I seen in the photos there is actually a raft under the pumpkin that the pumpkin sits in allowing it to float. I thought surely they would all be sinking ! Those pumpkins are on some serious doses of steriods man ! lol

Cris - I am not sure what people were thinking when they came up with this but obviously they really thought about it, or at least trial and error everytime they got in the pumpkin, then it sank and so on....I can actually picture a few men overboard and alot of bobbing pumpkins !

Now I think I have seen it all. Pumpkin boats, would have never thought to use a pumpkin that way.
