I received a huge and beautiful cabbage from a very good friend yesterday. Along with it was an explanation that cabbage is a good luck vegetable that should be eaten on New Year's Day. She furthered explained that the leaves are a sign of prosperity. You can believe I'll be eating that cabbage on January 1, 2012! This gift reminded me of the tradition in my family that we eat some combination of pork and kraut for luck in the new year. Each year, I cook a pork loin with lots of sauer kraut and usually some baked pineapple on the side. Our bank distributes cans of black-eyed peas for luck and prosperity. The can is printed with a recipe for a happy new year: 2 heaping cups of patience,1 heart full of love, 2 hands full of generosity, a dash of laughter, and 1 head full of understanding. The instructions are to: Sprinkle generously with kindness. Add plenty of faith and mix well. Spread over a period of a lifetime and serve everyone you meet. Not surprising that our bank is named "Prosperity!"
Margo, thanks for reminding me to get cabbage tonight at the grocery store! I have heard many times that it is a good luck vegetable and plan on making it myself on New Year's Day!
Happy New Year!

Have heard of the black-eyed peas for luck and prosperity but not cabbage. Fun to know and it's healthy too. Best wishes for 2012!
Very nice tradition! I like the Spanish one of eating 12 grapes before midnight clock stops striking...and the Scottish Hogmanay is another one....
I haven't heard of the grapes before, but it's worth a try! Thanks. Of course none of this good luck food will replace hard work in the pursuit of luck and prosperity, but it may help with health and happiness. Who isn't happy when they're eating good food?
I wish you a wonderful New Year with your cabbage!!!! May 2012 be fantastic for you!
this is a nice post and I like what it suggests .... I think this is a great recipe for success in business ... any business ... even reposted it
Good evening Margo.
Anything that brings good luck is great.
They say that pomegranates bring luck also.
Happy New Year.
