SETTING GOALS FOR 2012? Easier said than done if one doesn't begin with BABY STEPS!!

SETTING BUSINESS GOALS FOR 2012?  Easier said than done!!!  ACHIEVING OUR GOALS is easier when we remember to begin with BABY STEPS!!

Inspired by a wonderful new video produced by and staring, MICHAEL THORNTON, Michael provides a description of the process of changing your life, one day at a time.   Michasl skillfully describes the theory of MIND MOVIES, whereby, if I'm right, through visualization of the goal, success is more easily achieved.  I actually take that process one step further and, through the practice of PSYCHODRAMA, experience the emotion, relief and sense of achievement felt when the tasks are completed before doing the work or completing a task.  We can experience the high of success before actually doing the job.

Michael's MIND MOVIES process is a step in the right direct and I would expand that process to the actual steps taken to achieve those daily goals through by VISUALIZING THAT MOMENT WHEN THE GOAL HAS BEEN ACHIEVED or THE TASK HAS BEEN COMPLETED.  More importantly, actually experiencing the relief and reward of completing a task, especially an onerous or dreaded task, We can experience success before completing the task.  As I tell folks, "Think about how GOOD you're going to feel when you've done it".  See:  Psychodrama, whereby, through roll playing and simulation, a person can actually "feel" achievement and success.

REAL ESTATE SUCCESS MOTIVATION GURUS who sell expensive seminars, books, videos and coaching know that most real estate agents have little business experience.  Therefore, they cleverly sell SUCCESS.  Or, they sell the SIZZLE!!  They sell recipes for success through the use of their scripts, fliers, advertisements, company structures, farming material, For saleetc., etc.  What they do not and cannot sell is a plan for success based on your individual personality, history and capacity to perform according to their plan.  They may take the process a step farther and offer coaching.  As with the seminars, books and videos of the success gurus, the programs designed by the coaches are often based on their experience, not yours.  Simply stated, their plan may not fit YOU!

DISCLAIMER:  I wouldn't discourage anyone from purchasing the seminars, books, videos or coaching products offered for sale by "experts".  My goal here is to encourage readers to look WITHIN YOURSELF, identify your own skills and abilities and develop a PLAN FOR SUCCESS that suits YOUR personality and experience.

Few of us actually managed a company or a business with responsibility for the profitability of that business.  However, if we understand that managing our real estate practice is, indeed, running a business, the approach, planning and day to day operations may change dramatically.  Rather than looking to our employing broker or company for guidance, as would a government or private sector employee, we'll develop our own business goals and plans.  Rather than following a JOB DESCRIPTION written by the employer, we develop our own BUSINESS PLAN

Don't forget the budget.  It will save you from succumbing to the gurus, web site purveyors, SEO promises, etc. that may cost you far more than you'll ever receive in business benfits (sales).

FACT:  A JOB DESCRIPTION will suit an employer's goal of managing an employee to help the company profit.

FACT:  A BUSINESS PLAN will facilitate your goal of achieving sucess and profit for YOUR BUSINESS.

MAKE A LIST AND CHECK IT TWICE.  In fact, check, edit, change it faily, weekly, monthly as necessary and expand the list of tasks to achieve your goals.

Then THINK ABOUT how good you're going to feel when you complete those jobs/tasks . . . .

ONE STEP AT A TIME.

Lenn-   I love your post. Just last week, I was teaching a class to local agents. I polled everyone in the class about what tools they had and what they had purchased throughout the year to run their business. Mind you the agents had some great tools, however very few leads. Simply put, I learned that most had never taken the time to set up the websites, customize them and brand them, tweak them to themselves and the niche area they worked. They started lots of things and never completed one task.To build a real estate career and business, one must design a plan and then work that plan. It takes focus..and like you said. Baby Steps.

Excellent, Lenn.  Being able to visual not only the goal and idea of how to get there, but the completion as well is a great way to plan.  I hope you have a wonderful New Year!

Very well written...have my license only a few year (10/09) I also have run a successful construction company..both business are run differently!

I seem to have taken more steps back with real estate than forward! You have to stumble your way through, design your own plan, and set up how to handle different files.  I think by now after 2 years of falling down I do have some what of organization..always changing how I do things to try to better myself!

Real Estate school doesn't teach you how to run your business, I would recommend to any one new to get under the wing of an experienced agent or get on a team! If I started over I would look for a team to be on!

Lenn, I was introduced much earlier this year to mind movies, love the whole concept but didn't really use it well. I have something else I do for myself, anything to get myself feeling better and moving forward.

I have not heard of the psychdrama technique you refer to, interesting.

Sizzle is something I prefer to stay away from.

Now to spend the day in reflection... Happy Happy New Year Lenn!

Great counsel here, as always.  I developed my biz goal in August and just this week, I have broken it down into smaller goals by week and by month.  I try to measure my results weekly and always know my goal for appts and jobs sold, so I have a pretty good gauge is to how I'm doing.  It's much easier that way (and easier to correct if you are off).  I also have daily tasks.

Now, I just need to turn this business discipline into personal discipline e.g. so I can lose 10 pounds.  This is the year!

Andrea.  HA!  Psychodrama is simply a way of tricking myself into making a difficult task easier.  Works fo rme.

Fernando.  I'M LAUGHING OUT LOUD!  You're not the only one.  I remember my first exposure to some of the real estate gurus brought in by my then broker.  All I could think was "How are you going to put your words in my mouth??"  Not for me.

Kathy.  You'll learn.  I can't count hoe many times I've said, "They didn't teach that to me in real estate school."

Mike. YOU UNDERSTAND!!!  Not many do.

Peggy. You are right on target.

Frank.  Attention daily to our goals is essential.

Gary.  My pleasure.  With written (committed) goals, you'll achieve more.

Loreena.  Some will benefit from coaches.  I benefit more from good examples and personal experiences.

Emily.   You referenced, Psychodrama, improvisation and even old-fashioned therapy.  I agree completely.

Josh.  Thanks and same to you.

Good morning, Lenn. Yes, you are so right. I failed to incorporate that concept in my pitch. There are so many tools but so few use them or are even aware that they exist...

Lenn, many do not even know how to do a basic business plan...aka plan for the new year - expenses, income, advertising dollars.  I just look around me to my associates and they look at me when i mention in with a blank stare.  I use baby steps & there is always something at the forefront ...i suggest meditation it works too...Best to You especially in the New Year!

Michael.  Nothing wrong with your "pitch".  I just go a bit deeper into daily practices.

Ginny.  Good approach.  I don't even speak of matters of a business plan to folks.  They are, after all, my competitors.

Very, very well put Lenn.  Gee, it seems you have experience with this stuff!  I remember rejecting the "Winning Through Intimidation" attitude of the 70s in favor of what you describe.  Thanks for the reminder, yet again!

Jay. I examined that "winning by intimidation" theory and rejected it thoroughly. Perhaps because it reminded me of so many supervisors in the past. Or, when I read it in the early 90s that it reminded me of my then broker. "Winning by Intimidation" is another way of describing BULLYING.

Hi Lenn. I noticed this sentence, " In fact, check, edit, change it faily, weekly, monthly as necessary and expand the list of tasks to achieve your goals" where the fail is in the word daily. Ironically we have to work daily towards our goals and do what we must do.. not just wish for it or dream about it but execute it as well. Hope you have a fantastic 2012.
