Although I'm not a fan of YouTube, mostly due to the low quality, they did announce a change to its service today which I find very interesting.  They've upped the size limit to videos from 100MB max to 1GB!  They also released software that allows bulk uploading of videos.

Just another sign that video is here to stay - in a BIG way! Probably a smart move as its competition gets more sophisticated, and HD Internet video becomes more common, the low-quality of most YouTube videos is becoming a liability.

Here is the text of their announcement:

Have a hard drive full of new videos? With the YouTube Uploader, we’ve now made it easier to get them all live on the site. This small piece of software lets you upload multiple videos to YouTube at the same time; each video can be up to 10 minutes in length and up to 1GB in size. That’s right, no more compressing to 100MB - we want your big files!

Right now the YouTube Uploader is only available for Windows PCs but we’re cooking up a Mac version too. To get started, just go to the installer webpage and download the software. Then you’ll be able to access the Multifile Upload page and start your, well, uploading. These videos will be available in My Videos after they have finished processing. (Note: it may take 30 minutes or more for extremely large files to appear on your page.) We link to the Multifile Upload page from today’s single file upload page so you can always find your way back.

Happy Uploading!

Fred,

This is great, everyone has been waiting for this. If your not real skilled with compression software, it can be difficult to load your videos on You Tube. Thanks for the update.

Lenn:  Not sure exactly WHAT this upgrade does.....   I'm just the messenger!  We'll find out!  Is the video itself upgraded?  Does it just allow multiple uploads and larger files? (just to be compressed again within an inch of it's life for the same muddy, blurry video.....)   Not sure if it upgrades what's currently online or just new... or nothing!

I DO know they are slowly upgrading YouTube to the H.264 codec which is MUCH better, and will allow video to be viewed on the iPhone.  Currently they have converted SOME of their videos, but I don't think all.

What IS nice, for those who do like to upload to YouTube, is the you can upload multiple videos at once.  Other sites, like Crackle.com have offered this option for awhile...   It's also nice for people who don't know how to properly compress videos and have these bloated files - you can still upload them (if you have a half day!) and they will be compressed for you!  It remains to be seen though if the quality is higher.

Fred - That is a nice change for sure and this means I won't have to compress the video before I upload it.  This should solve much of the video quality issue that YouTube is known for.  Thanks for the post.
