We Owe So Much to Our Veterans!

American Flag

Of course, there continues to be so much controversy about the War , BUT no matter what your political feelings and beliefs, one thing is undeniable: WE OWE SO MUCH TO THOSE WHO CHOSE TO SERVE.

I don't talk about it too often, but I often think about those individuals, including my own father, who chose to sign up for military service so those of us who either couldn't serve or didn't choose to serve, could still enjoy the life we so enjoy in this country.

Veteran's Day is upon us - and I challenge you to do something nice for a Veteran. I also challenge you to not only think about the women and men who serve once a year on November 11 - but 365 days a year. Don't know anyone who has or who is serving our country? No problem! Xerox has made it easy for us to reach out to say Thanks at: LetsSayThanks.com. To send care packages to those who are overseas, check out: AnySoldier.com

Many of our Veterans have trouble coping with the aftermath of war (e.g. sleeping throughout the night, or adjusting to other aspects of civilian life) - but chances are, you will never hear them complain about it publicly. Instead, they choose to make the best out of their lives - by going back to their jobs, raising children, volunteering in their communities, etc.

In Raleigh, on Saturday, November 10, 2007, we're honoring our Veterans with the Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony. The parade begins at 9 a.m. and will be followed by a formal ceremony at the State Capitol at 11 a.m. See this map for details.

I hope you have a great weekend! How will you be celebrating Veterans Day?

Pete ~ Thanks for stopping by! The sacrifice of our Veterans is so amazing. My dad has just now begun to talk about his experience in Vietnam, and it's quite amazing what he endured.

You are so right, Darleen.

It is a shame how we have seemingly forgotten the reason for the three day weekend!

Mike ~ Yes, it is a shame that some folks only think about having a 3-day weekend. I think we sometimes take our freedoms for granted. Maybe because we've always had them? I don't know!

I have nothing but respect for the men and women who serve in today's (and yesterday's) military.  They do a job few want to be a part of especially when put into situations by political leaders who don't know the meaning or benefit of diplomacy.

I have always despised those who treat the military with disrespect for all they do.

Thank-you, Darleen, for posting this.

Matthew ~ When I was in college, I did a school assignment on homeless Veterans for a journalism class. This one gentleman had served in Vietnam and had ended up homeless in the 1980s. It was quite eye-opening, to say the least. It makes me sad just to think about it. I can still see his face.

Thanks Darleen! A lot has happened since I served... '65-'69 I would not have given those years up for anything.

Darleen, I agree with you.  Its far beyond whether we agree or not with the war.  Its about honoring those that make the ultimate sacrifice for us whether it is now or in wars past.  My hats off to all those in the military in every branch of service.

Kimberly ~ Hi. Thanks for stopping by. I only wish there was more we could do for those who have served or are curently serving. I've often heard people say that they don't know what to do so they do nothing. I think something as simple as a card would let the Veterans know we're thinking of them.

Today was such a busy day, even being a holiday that I did not get the chance to post here to thank the many veterans that have served our country.

THANK YOU for all you have offered and sacrificed for our country. You deserve more than we as a country will ever be able to give.

Ed ~ Yes, we most definitely owe so much to our Veterans. We'll never be able to repay them - but we can sure try!

Thanks for this post. We need to remember that our Vets wrote a blank check to the USA for "up to and including my life". That is honor and not enough people have a clue what that is anymore.

Simon ~ Wow! That's deep. Reading your words sent chills up my spine. What you said is true - but so many people have no clue about what our Veterans have - and continue to endure.

We have real short memories unfortunately and that includes what our Vets do for us. Someone else once said that Freedom isn't free. I did a story on my radio show this week which revealed that a full 25% of the homeless population of the United States are Vets. That is both disgraceful and unacceptable.

Simon ~ Wow, I hadn't heard that statistic - a full 25 percent of the homeless are Veterans?! Oh my goodness! This is definitely unacceptable. We must all do our parts to serve those who have served us. Whether it's writing a check to a worthy cause that helps our Vets or reaching out personally to those we know are in need.

Darleen - that statistic is true and it is shameful. I actually think it will take more than money. We need to write to our elected representatives and let them know that something needs to be done. Better pensions for those who have served. Better ways of keeping in touch. Better ways of helping them find jobs once they leave. But certainly, that stat is unacceptable.
