When It's all TOO Frustrating, Go Visit Active Rain

Some people cook when they're frustrated. Some go for a walk or listen to music. I just go read and write, at least in winter. In summer I might choose the walk - or pulling weeds!

Today's frustration started a couple of weeks ago when I listened to a teleseminar about putting books on Amazon for Kindle.

Kindle Books sounded like a good idea...

Since I have several ebooks, I decided to give it a try. So I started with one Kindle book coverand did a bunch of editing. Then I wrote the "sales page" that would go on Amazon. Then last night I started learning about how to format it for Kindle, add the table of contents, etc.

The instructions made my brain short out for a while, but then I started following the steps - slowly. It wasn't easy because I would just think I understood the last paragraph when the next paragraph would say "If you're using Word 7, disregard and do this..." UGH!!

Anyway, finally I had the text formatted and saved as a "Filtered HTML."

Next step: Download the MobiPocket Creator. I downloaded it and the Kindle Previewer... or at least I thought so.

At that point it was 2 a.m. and I decided to quit and come back today...

Today I can find the "Creator," and I followed the steps all the way through "Build finished." Then I saved the document as a .prc file. So far so good...

But now what?? No matter what I click on, it doesn't do anything. It just takes me in a big circle - around and around and around and back to where I started. The title is just sitting there... sitting there.

As for the previewer... I've downloaded it and said "run" 3 times now... and still can't find it. The third time I even specified where I wanted it saved, but... nope.  It may be in my computer 3 times - somewhere.

Finally I decided to go ahead and upload the file to Amazon. It took a while to find the .prc file created by the MobiPocket Creator, but I finally did. It was hidden under a bunch of other "stuff."

Not being able to find the previewer, I used the one on Amazon.

Now, if I could figure out why the table of contents that I spent 2 hours creating is NOT THERE, it would be nice.

I expect I need to start again from the beginning - or somewhere. But why isn't the Kindle program showing showing the table of contents when the file I uploaded from my computer does?

I often wished I had a techie brain that would just "understand" this stuff and why it does and doesn't work.  Or, that I had a techie person on call - to just run over here and show me the error of my ways about 16 times a day.

Meanwile, I need to unwind. I think I'll just hang out here at Active Rain for a while and read.

Happy New Year!

Michael - I WILL figure this out. Somehow. I'm determined to get it done this year, and that means I don't have much time!

Laura - For reading I much prefer paper books. Who wants to curl up in front of the fire with an electronic gadget? Not me.  But since Amazon sells one million Kindle books per week... I think you and I are in a minority.

Thanks Marge! I did get that ebook uploaded - but still don't know if it's "right." The next step, according to an email from Amazon, is to set it up so it can also be sold as a print book...

One step always leads to two more!

MARTE~About halfway through, I'd probably say "screw it" and go the old=-fashioned route and just pick up a book!

I've had copious amounts of internet troubles (actually, for YEARS with CenturyLink, they're GAWDAWFUL, but now the phone guy cut off our WIFI, and it's a complete nightmare). So...I walk away, pick up a good novel and call it a nite...or a day--whatever. It's too much angst to let it get to me. The hardest part?  When I can't d**ned well figure it out by myself.

Gayle - When it comes to reading, that's exactly what I do. But... Amazon sells one million kindle books per week, so I decided my little ebooks should be there.

I agree with the hardest part - when I can't just figure it out myself. So much of this internet stuff requires specialized language skills - as in knowing what the heck they're talking about!
