During the Summer season here in the Florida Keys, life is easy and things are kinda quiet. You can get on and off Overseas Highway (U.S. 1) with ease, grocery store checkout lines are tolerable, and you can actually find a place to sit at your favorite bar. In Key West town, it's easy to situate yourself at the harbour railing on Mallory Square to enjoy the legendary sunsets there, and there's little problem finding a parking space.
Well, all that is beginning to change now, and this phenomenon is really a good thing!! Starting with Fantasy Fest in late October, the "Parrott Heads Meeting of the Minds" last week, and the Power Boat Races going on now, the Snowbirds are beginning to trickle back in here. The Snowbirds are defined as our good friends from the northern states, most of whom live in New England, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. These folks either own second homes here in the Keys or rent by the month through the Winter months.
Recently, more people are showing up in our local churches, traffic on U.S. 1 is picking up, and it's not quite so easy to be assured of a seat at our favorite restuarant for a nice, relaxing dinner or a Saturday morning pig-out breakfast. Some Conchs and other Locals will complain aloud, woeing the fact that the hectic time of year is here again. Speaking for us businesspeople here, however, we welcome the Snowbirds back! We're GLAD that Summer and our slow season is over (and not just because the humidity and tropical heat is gone!). With "company coming", our lifeblood returns! The Snowbirds and their guests buy Real Estate, cars, diving and fishing gear, and spend their $$$$ at all the business establishments here in the Keys. BRING 'EM ON!!!!
Your Florida Keys REALTOR, Bruce Herndon
