Marketing Ideas to Run Up the New Year Flagpole

Do you know what makes today special? Not only is it the first Monday of the New Year, but it is also marks the one day of the year that you can try any new marketing idea without the fear of failure. Today is "Run it Up the Flagpole and See if Anybody Salutes It Day" where you have the opportunity to take your fresh, unused, creative marketing ideas out of the box.

The idea behind running it up the flagpole is to present your marketing brilliance to those around you just to see what response you receive. It gives you a day specifically committed to experimenting with new marketing strategies. It also provides valuable feedback from your friends, peers and customers giving direction to your 2012 marketing efforts.

Marketing Ideas to Run Up the Flagpole

  1. How about trying something totally new with your email campaigns?  Are they stale, boring or in desperate need of an update?  Today is a great day to dust those old emails off, re-write, re-work or re-brand them. Spice them up with added verbiage, make a clear call to action or create a whole new campaign with that big idea you have been mulling over for months.  Need a few ideas to get you started?  Check out  Email Content Hiding in Plain Sight.
  2. Create or Change up your Facebook Landing Page.  Not familiar with what this is?  A landing page is the first page new fans will see before heading to your wall.  It's an excellent opportunity to market to your specific niche, direct fans to a special report or explain the benefits of working with you and your team.
  3. Design new and unique business cards that give clients special insight into who you are both personally and professionally.  The days of boring head shots and cookie cutter designs are behind us.  Let your personality shine through!
  4. Put a new twist on your print marketing.  Take your clients by surprise and hold their attention with a fresh look.  The most effective marketing campaigns are those that stick with you long after you pass that sign or bus stop.
  5. Take your website from a static, outdated and underused online tool to a lead generation powerhouse.  Have you reassessed the reason behind your website since you first launched?  The niche you served 3 years ago may not be the same one you serve today.
Not every idea you have will be a success.  However, the more times you take a swing,  the better chance you have to hit a home run.  Don't fear failure today or any day in marketing.  Running it up the flagpole is a powerful way to build your business by gaining important insight from your sphere.

It's a time for new beginnings and fun experimentation. Give it a try. Who knows…you may just find a great new marketing tool!

Hi Rebekah. These are some wonderful ideas. I am working on my Wordpress site to give it a new face lift, and I would love to create a better Landing Page for my FB Business page. I am booking marking your post for now, But I will certainly implement some, if not all of these ideas.

I think each one of these items are essential to look at and update, if needed, if an agent's desire is to remain competitive as we move forward.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you Jerry!  Have fun with both of those exciting projects!!

That's exactly right Ken...they're essential IF you want to remain on the forefront of your clients minds and at the top of your industry.

I soooo agree Aimee!  We overwhelm ourselves by taking on too much and thinking we need the next new toy that rolls out.  Btw...I love the spelling of your name.  A good friend spells hers the same and it was the first I'd seen it until now.

Rebekah - these are some of the very things I'm working on this week. To your point - Monday of the New Year is a great time to update, renew, refresh and revive our business persona. I'm finally having my logo professionally done, and new business cards. Later when I have more time, I'll check out your links - I'm sure there's great information I can implement into my 2012 goals!

Rebekah.  Very good ideas.  I love to switch up business cards.  Will thinks I'm crazy but I always order a new design when I need to replenish.  Some people say I am not doing a good job of branding when I do that but business cards usually go to different people all the time so who would know.  We need to keep everything fresh and interesting.

More good advice from you.  We get in a habit of churning out the same old thing every month.  We need to give our newsletters, postcards, etc. a face lift.

Your new photo is good.  Your photo projects a happy, friendly and vivacious image of you.  Just the image I have of you from your posts.  Happy New Year.

I love that idea Belinda and can totally relate to people thinking you're crazy for changing things up.  I have ADD when it comes to marketing and am always playing around with mine.  Some call it crazy...I call it FUN!

Happy New Year Tatyana and Tamara!  Good luck in 2012 with all of your marketing endeavors!

Constina - FB landing pages are an amazing opportunity to capture leads and the attention of your target market.  There are some great free sites out there that offer pre-created themes/templates.
