Say Hi to the Search Engines

According to Wikipedia, there are a lot of search engines. I stopped counting at 100.

With all the search engines on the internet, you'd think the market share would be more fragmented than it actually is. But month after month, the top three search destinations are consistently Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft . In September, they combined for 91% of the searches according to comScore.

One of the easiest - and cheapest - ways to get your web site noticed by the search engines is to simply let them know you're online! This can easily be overlooked with all the online marketing opportunities that exist.

Here are the "Site Submission" pages for the top three search engines - All Are Free

Google:  www.google.ca/addurl/?hl=en&continue=/addurl

Yahoo!: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit

Microsoft: http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx

I also look Ask.com as it new and gaining some traction. Most people vist my site from google by far.

Ask.com is gaining - I believe they're #4 with just under 5%... Unfortunately they don't have a specific site submission page - they suggest following "sitemaps" protocols as the best way to get noticed by the Ask crawler.

It does not hurt to submit to the engines (but do this only once) but there are questions as to how much it really helps. I think MSN and Yahoo are a bit better at keeping the site in the index through submission only but many times Google just ignores it or will drop it if they can't find any links to the new site. If you get a few decent links to your site the engines will find you and you will stay there. Juts by adding a link from your Active Rain profile and blog will allow the engines to find you and it will provide good link juice as long as it is going to a real estate related site.

Thanks Terry and Mark -

- Mark, just checked out your MCS site - as a designer I was very impressed. Clean, attractive, very professional.

Thanks Jason, actually I can't credit for the design but I will pass it along to our designer here. He does a great job even when I am pestering him to make sure everything he does is search engine friendly.
