Four New Year's Resolutions You Must Keep...from the Manchester Fire Department!

What are your New Year's resolutions?

  • To lose weight?
  • To get organized?
  • To pay off credit cards?
  • To appreciate others?
  • To get a new job?

While we are all making lofty (or not so lofty) New Year's resolutions, the Manchester Fire Department is asking people to make just four resolutions that will ensure the safety of everyone.  These are simple, but if everyone did them, the results could really make a difference.

1.  Have a working smoke detector in all sleeping areas in the home.

2.  Have a working carbon monoxide detecter in the home.

3.  Have an emergency plan, designate a meeting place, and put together an emergency kit.

4.  Don't drive while distracted, especially by cell phones and texting.

These are all really easy and may just help you be around long enough to keep your other New Year's resolutions!

If you need help with smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, or an emergency plan, the Manchester Fire Department will help you.  They encourage you to call them at 860-647-3267.  They will be more than happy to assist you.

Peggy, what a great list!   We have had so many home fires in Denver lately, and all could have been avoided with smoke detectors, or not using space heaters!   Great list to start the year out with!

Peggy - seems easy enough to do, if people would just take the 30 minutes required to ensure their homes have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors this would avoid some fires. While most of us don't want to think about an evacuation emergency - having a plan in place is a really smart idea.

I've never bought into the whole resolution thing, but I think the Fire Department is on to something!

Peggy, the police in this state have been dilligent about cracking down on driving distracted. Making sure the home and family are protected is a smart thing to do. Happy New Year

Now these are resolutions that I can stand by!  I don't bother with the others, but these are 4 things we should all be committing ourselves to this year.

Peggy those are easy resolutions that the Fire Department is asking people to make, but there will be many that will break them many times before even the week is out.  But we can hope that there will be many that will keep them.

Peggy -- Great tips that could save lives.  How many homes DO have smoke detectors, but they are not connected or have dead batteries.  So many tragedies can be averted if these steps are followed.

While I don't generally get into resolutions, these are some I can definitely get into and recommend to all my customers, past, present and future.  Thanks for the reminder Peggy!

Hi Peggy,

When I first read losing weight and getting organized, I thought that was coming from the fire department too.  LOL :)  They are the ones who have to carry us out of burning buildings....

Peggy:  If we all just put these 4 small items into our lives to change the Fire Department would have an easier time.  Good list to pass along.
