Georgia Drought - Water Conservation Begins with the Individual. Conserve Water!

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster 0225078705

Georgia is up against an unprecedented drought, and we must all play our part in trying to conserve our water.  No one knows when it will end,and how much stress the lack of water will place on our way of life as the water supply diminishes.  Conservation begins with raising a personal awareness of our own water consumption.  It is very important that we educate our children, community and co-workers to the need to conserve water.  As concerned residents and Realtors in Atlanta Georgia area, we felt it was our duty to create several Blogs that deal with the Georgia Drought issue and water conservation for individuals.

  • No outside watering
  • Obey all local laws concerning water use
  • Collect rain water when possible.
  • Sweep or blow walkways instead of using hose or power wash
  • If you have a pool, see if you can arrange to have down spout water diverted to your pool.
  • Don't let the faucet run until water is hot or cold.
  • Try to refrigerate a pitcher of water for drinking
  • Refrigerate beverages and cut down on use of ice
  • When washing dishes in a sink, fill both basins with water one for rinse.
  • Scrap off excess, and avoid pre-washing Use spray wand!
  • Reduce dish washing. Full loads only!
  • Recycle water whenever possible or practical!
  • Reduce numbers of loads of wash by running full loads only.
  • Reuse clean household water to water your houseplants or outdoor planters.
  • Cut back on toilet flushes when possible.
  • Each flush you eliminate saves between two and seven gallons of water.
  • Use an electric razor or turn on turn on water only when needed.
  • Use a glass for rinse water when brushing teeth instead of letting the faucet run.
  • Fix leaking faucets and toilets
  • Add a solid brick in the toilet tank to displace water, and conserve water.
  • Install a low-flow toilet.
  • Install an instant hot water faucet in kitchen.
  • Do not take baths...take showers instead of a bath and save 30 gallons.
  • Take Short Showers - consider shaving in shower.
  • Shut shower off when soaping or shampooing
  • Install a water-saving showerhead.
  • Install a tankless water heater
  • Purchase a high efficiency washer

I am in Michigan surrounded by one of the largest supplies of fresh water in the world and until everyone get it we all could suffer. Water is one of our greatest resources and we all need to be aware or are we going to wait until it is not just areas that have a drought but an expanded are of states that are not conscience of our environment and the water we all take for granted. Thanks for your post.

Try living in Vegas. They talked about water issues everyday. They soon stopped putting sod in the front of houses. Seemed like the right way to go in Vegas.

Jim,

We have droughts every year..they do not allow water usage outside a few times a week and when we do not see long periods of rain they tend to enforce them even more...but you get used to it in Florida. Summer time is when it gets bad and if Lake Okeechobee is low enough they raise the alerts.

Jim - We have had water bans at various points over the last few years. What is amazing is the people who are so brazen and just go about watering their magnificent lawns anyway. Some of them are sly and will do it in he middle of the night but others in broad daylight! It can be frustrated when you follow the rules and your lawn looks aweful next to you neighbors.

Heard long ago that a couple that prayed together stayed together.  Think that the same would be true for showering?

PS - Took me more time to type the graphic word than it did to write the two sentences above!

Bill Gassett Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate  I think it is par for the course!  They have individuals snitching on their their neighbors.  Here it is going to boil down to no drinking water soon!  Seems like the folks in government have never heard of moratoriums on new zoning, development and impact.

No outside watering? How do you keep your lawns green? We have water restrictions- only water on certain days, after dark. But the HOA communities would have a cow if they saw dead grass!
