Why do you blog?

Michael Martine a blog coach extraordinaire poses the question "Why do you blog?" on his blog today. I was surprised at how many responded "Just for fun".

I get a kick out of the consumer contacting me but for me this is about supporting my business. So what do you think? Blogging for fun or business?

I knew the minute I made the decision to blog, that it was for business. In the nearly 6 months that I have been blogging, I have connected with new clients, and have met some wonderful people on AR.

My reasons for blogging vary depending on circumstances. For example, I am blogging right now because I can't sleep!!

Katerina - I am blogging for business! I miss seeing you too. Stop by my outside blog! I am doing NaNoWriMo this month but hopefully will get by here more in Dec.

Harold - Business all the way! My site has rocketed to the top of the SERP since I started blogging.

Eric - I might blog more because I can't sleep but for me it's all about the business. This just helps the insomnia pay for itself!

I'm in this for the business! I enjoy this part of the business though and put too much effort into reading, creating blogs, and putting ideas received into action. I should be doing my prospecting instead!

Ashley, Amazing how many of us answered 'just for fun'. But even though it's fun...I'm also doing it for the business and to learn from more people.

Mary - I do love the ideas I get from reading other blogs. I receive more leads from my blogging than any open house though and I do have more fun with this.

Kay - I agree with you completely!

Both....for me it's both. It would have to be fun, othewise it would be just another task, and I have enough of those already!

I have a two personal and several business blogs. My business blogs are, of course, to generate exposure for my real estate business through showcasing my knowledge of the local area and industry in general. The saying the teacher learns more than the student is so true. As I keep my antennae up for blogging ideas, I stay alert and informed on current issues.

I also enjoy personal blogging but I don't do that nearly as often... only as events justify.

Ashley, So good to see you again. I blog for business. However not all of my posts are business related.

Ashley, I would have to say it is for business. If I were going to blog for fun I would do it on a completely different topic. I feel this is part of my marketing and education campaign.

I blog for business and the money it brings but I love the fun I have reading other blogs. The real estate community is incredibly generous with sharing knowledge. Glad to hear you are having such success!

Right now it's mostly business with a little fun mixed in, but in 2008 I can see the monetization and cause answers coming into play as well. It's interesting how our blogging motivation changes as we get more into it.

Rich - Well this is more fun than cold calling or door hanging but I wouldn't be stressing over the results if it wasn't for business. But it is THE most enjoyable business task I do. Well when my traffic is good anyway :)

Carol - I wanted to start another personal blog this month for my writing and then thought better of it. I just don't have the time to devote to it and the business ones. Maybe another time but business first.

Mana - I have a lot of non real estate stuff on my blog! Deviled Egg day comes to mind :)

Todd/Danielle - I agree! I would love to start a blog for my writing but I just don't have the time right now. If it was just for pure pleasure my writing would get the most focus.

Lisa - I think I learn more on other blogs than I do at sales meetings and CE.

John - I agree. I think alot of people start for fun or social networking. Once they see traffic and business from it things change.

Ashley...how do you spend "this many hours" online just for fun? I actually do enjoy several of my posts and reading and commenting as well but if it wasn't mostly for business...I wouldn't be around as much.

Wow Ashley! I wouldn't have thought just for fun would be the winner...Especially since you added it here. I would think a similar survey on AR would yield more business related results...But there are many here for the fun too1

I look at blogging as a fun way to boost my business. I learn and interact with other professionals and the public all the while boosting my internet presence. It gets no better than that! I love the poll in your post and I am quite surprised by the results.

Go to http://toluna.com and create a free account.
Create a poll through their online poll-building tool (it's easy).
You will be given a link you give to people so they can take your poll. You can email the link or put it in a blog post.
You will also be given some HTML code you can copy and paste into your blog's post writing window -- but you MUST be writing in "code view" for this.

So good to hear from you again. For me personally it's to help support my existing busines and the agents within my office. What I did not expect was to develop the friendships and bonds along the way. That has been an absolutely bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Ashley - I only got involved with blogging because I believe it could enhance my business. I was not into social networks until AR.

Ashley- Just like most folks, I blog for business. Along the way, however, I've found that it helps increase my knowledge about my community and is lots of fun. I also have met some amazing people that I would have missed along the way and that would have been a true loss.

I blog for many reasons. Sometimes to just get it off mt chest. Sometimes for business, sometimes for others. I really have found that I enjoy it!

I have stopped blogging for the most part. I'm trying to get back into it. Great source of prospecting and awesome way to learn things.

I blog for business, as well as my love of writing. (I am a journalist by trade, and writing is in my blood!) Sometimes after a long, busy day, writing a blog helps me to wind down. Some people have a glass of wine - I like to blog.

Ashley, I would say I blog for fun (and for sharing) when writing, and to learn and also find about others' experiences when reading. Many ONLY blog for business. It didn't surprise me at all that many blog for fun. When you strike up a conversation it doesn't immediately go for business. Rapport has to be built first.
