When Moses came down off Mt. Sinai, he brought with him ten commandments.  "Do, or don't do these things," was the idea, "and you will prosper in the land."  There are ten do's and don'ts for success in the virtual land of Active Rain as well.

Edit:  But first...  Read the ActiveRain Community Guidelines !  Then bone up on the following commandments as you move toward the Promised Land!

1.  Thou Shalt Blog.  It's the first commandment.  If you're not going to write, what are you here for?  Quick true story:  One member (score: 115,500 or so) has brought more new members into Active Rain than anyone else.  507 to date, and more each week.  They join up, but they don't blog.  How do I know that?  If they blogged, this guy would get 10% of their points added to his own.  His invite points (109,354) divided by invitees (507) equals an average of less than 216 points per new member.  If each new member would post just one blog, he would get an additional 10,000+ points.

2Thou shalt subscribe to blogs that interest you.  If it doesn't grab your interest, you won't stay with it very long.  I found the subscribe button before I learned anything else about Active Rain.  When I got to 60 subscriptions, I had to start weeding out the non-bloggers (see commandment #1) and adding new interesting bloggers.  I still do that. You'll find a handful of favorites, but new favorites are joining every day.

3.  Thou shalt comment daily on ten blog posts.  You're more competitive than you think .  The genius of Active Rain is that it rewards interaction between members, and some of that reward is limited to each 24 hour day.  When day is done, those potential points have evaporated into the ether, never to be captured.  if your ten comments haven't been made prior to midnight, AR time, that's 250 points that will never be yours.  p.s. "Great post!" is not a comment.  It's the quickest way I know to have a true blogger bar you from their site.  Didn't know they could do that?  They can!

4.  Thou shalt join at least 10 groups.  As of this evening, we have 2,429 groups in Active Rain.  The biggest, most active groups are listed on the Groups page.  You'll join one or two of those.  Dig deeper.  Find groups that share your interests.  I joined Photography, not because I had anything to say on the subject, but to find people brighter than I, from whom I could learn.  And what do you know?  Today, after having posted 100 blogs, the single blog I posted to Photography won a Feature from that group!

5.  Thou shalt not plagiarize.  Moses had this one, too.  He said "thou shalt not steal."  One member found an essay on the internet that was just superb!  He copied and pasted it on AR, added a couple of lines of his own, and was featured!  When the plagiarism came to light, he was banned from the community.  It's so easy to catch the dummies that do this; just copy a line or paragraph of text, paste it into Google, and hit Go!

6.  Thou shalt post articles of interest to Localism.  You'll get Google juice!  And along with the articles, learn to post pictures of local interest on Localism.  You'll get 100 points for your first, 50 points for the next several, and 25 points for the rest.

7.  Thou shalt READ Active Rain posts as part of your education.  I joined AR with zero knowledge of Widgets, SEO, Web II, or much else.  I found so much useful content to help me improve my skills.  I found people who write tutorial posts explaining the "How To..." of things I wanted to do.  Can you embed a video into your post or comment?  There are Active Rain members with Tutorials just for you.

8.  Thou shalt reciprocate!  When you're fortunate enough to have someone comment on your post, you'll see a little link back to their AR profile.  After you've commented back to them, and saved the comment, go back to that link.  Click it and be whisked into their Active Rain presence.  Click on their blog, and find something to comment on.  You may have to look for awhile sometimes.  Some members post nothing but listings.  Okay, but boooooring!  The queen of reciprocation is The Lovely Wife.  TLW...ROAR.  Look her up; you'll subscribe to her blog.  You won't be able to help yourself.

9.  Thou Shalt Have fun!  It's a commandment.  Garrison Keillor said "Thank you, God, for this good life, and forgive us if we do not enjoy it enough."  Don't you love that?

10.  Thou shalt..._____________________________________________________________

Please fill in that 10th commandment for me in your comment below.

112 Comments on For Newbies Only: The Ten Commandments of Active Rain, With Apologies to Moses

Mike, you're such a great guy, I doubt that Moses would take exception with your borrowing the commandments for a post.

For commandment number ten, I'd suggest "Thou shalt network"!  Add associates and get to know your fellow Active Rain members and colleagues.

Thou shalt respect other people's blogs and the comment section and not promote themselves with pictures or links to their sites, etc. on some else's blog.  OK, that was long-winded, but even though it's in the rules, I see this so often and it is just plain rude!  Thanks for the post.

Eugene Bridget:  Thou shalt read the blog in its entirety (providing you have nothing more pressing) before commenting.  See commandment #9!  LOL

Edi:  You're welcome!  Thanks for stopping by to comment.

Marc:  I don't mind photos if they're appropriate, and sized correctly.  Sizing is so very easy, but a lot of members don't know how to do it.  A blog post, maybe?  I also don't mind outside links, when they add to the discussion.  I actually encourage them; however, if they're pure "me, me, me," I just delete the comment.

Judi:  God didn't make clones of us; I appreciate your comment, and the one that inspired yours.

Dan:  Thou shalt sign 'em up!  Thanks for commenting.

Teri E:  Thanks for the encouragement!  Thou shalt read the whole blog, and take notice of the ninth commandment.  LOL  Thanks for visiting and commenting; I appreciate seeing you so often!

Dale:  Are you snowed in yet?  I think you're my greatest encouragement.  Stay warm.

Terri H:  I wish we had more blogging Insurance agents like you on Active Rain; thou shalt go find your friends and competitors and sign them up.

Missy:  ...until thy fingers give out!  I notice my right thumb gives out first.  Carpal Thumbnail Syndrome.  The brain never gives out!  LOL

Double B:  Drive the herd my way.  We'll corral the bunch!  I need to figure out how to put one of those cool, shiny Subscribe buttons on each blog.  Time to see Cheryl, I guess.

Nick:  Thanks for the love!

Terry W:  You're welcome.  I agree; I really have to focus sometimes.  I've bookmarked the heck out of interesting blogs.  I sometimes just give an hour to browsing bookmarks.  (Another post idea!)

Joeann:  Let's schedule a Starbucks visit together this week.  I'll call you.

Donald:  The benefits are there to reap!  Page #1 on Google? See my post Where's the Money in Blogging? Active Rain Brings Home the Bacon!

Elizabeth:  You paint mental images with your words.  I'm on my way to subscribe to your blog.  You won my heart with one comment.

Karen:  "Thou shalt not whine..." Oh, yeah!  Thanks for commenting!

Lisa:  Thanks for telling your story.  Plagiarism is intellectual Identity Theft!

Gary:  Thanks for the encouragement!  You've got to come down to the old Pueblo soon.

Bill:  I appreciated commenting on your blog.  Do you know that Bill Marriott has 49,495 "Other Points?!"

Sam:  Thanks for commenting; I have it on good authority that Moses might not mind.  Anyhow, Mom used to say that it's easier to get forgiveness than permission.  LOL

Linda:  No spam!  And you are so nice!  I knew you'ld say that.

Matt:  Your comment is so useful to AR newbies.  No personal attacks.  Respect.  This isn't a talk show, after all.  Nor is it the floor of our esteemed Congress.  Reasoned debate is making a comeback, thanks to people like you and others on Active Rain.

Mike:  Thou shalt help the Newbies!  You're the Good Samaritan of the AR community today!

Ann:  If I had known about the post on Community Guides, it would have been in there!  Thanks for participating.

Cheryl:  Your comment bears repeating in full:  This is a #11 (not a #10)  --Thou shalt not become despondent if thou is unable to meet the high standards of the other commandments.  (With the exception of #5, of course.)  Thanks for stopping by to comment!  I appreciate you and your tutorials.  You're who came to mind regarding teaching others how to..."

Kris:  Keep it nice.  Ain't it the truth!

Susan:  Make in personal.  Sarah Cooper came to mind when I read your comment.  Thank you!

Todd & Danielle:  Thanks for commenting!  I didn't know there WAS a help section!

Ntsike:  It is a pain, but we have AR Tylenol.  Here goes:  Will someone who knows of an AR Musical Interest Group leave a comment here, and contact Ntsike Willis?  Thanks in advance!

John: I like the idea of spreading the word!

And I have an another appointment--gotta dash!  Thanks to all of you personally for commenting!  I appreciate you and Active Rain!

It often takes way more than 10 comments. Many of the comments that get made never get any points at all. Don't understand why this happens. But sometimes it takes more than 30 comments to get the scoring system to register up to the 10 that will get points. Any idea why?

Is there a separate section or group to pitch listings?  Just wondering.  S

Some days I stop by AR for a quickie blog to read or comment to post and often find that an agent has posted a bunch of listings that have to be weeded thru to get to the real blogs.   It seems to be happening more and more, I just thought there is [or maybe should be] a specific section for pitching listings.

Thou shalt teach others as they would like to be taught!  I can tell you as a newbie to this whole blog thing it is overwhelming.  I have learned so much from the active rain community and am a big fan of Jennifer Allan and her philosophy of selling as a result.  I am still a little hesitant about blogging as I don't know how to get the graphics up (heck I can't seem to get my photo up - that is todays project!).  One thing I do know is that within the next six months I will begin to blog once a week and I will learn to do it well - thanks to bloggers like you and the active rain community.

Hello there Miracle Mike! I agree with you that the 10 Commandments are integrated in all aspects of our lives. How clever of you! I suppose my suggestion for the tenth Commandment could actually be the first AR Commandment.  Thou Shalt thinketh before you speaketh! We all have a tendency to be braver behind a keyboard. I know I'm not the only one that would like to be able to rescind certain things. Thanks for a great blog. Debra

Christina:  Blog etiquette!  That's elegant. Thanks for commenting.

Debra: Hi back to you!  I understand what you mean.  Sometimes my tongue gets in front of my eye tooth, and I can't see what I'm saying.

Gary: I've been able to refer out twice since July, and have received two referrals.

Jeff/Zeus:  We'll take the lightning thing to heart!  Hear, hear!

Jan:  Converts are good.  LOL  Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Jem: Love your comment; I can't wait to see what awaits on your blog!

Jo:  Thanks for the encouragement!  You're a bright star for me.

Armando:  Thanks for commenting.  The Golden Rule would solve a lot of complaining in the Rain.

Tracy: I'll come look for your picture.  The upload thing is easy if someone shows you how.  I'd be glad to help.

Lucky: You have the coolest name for a blogger!  Thanks for commenting.

Wendy:  There is a group for nothing but listings.

Here it is: Listings By Address

Maureen: Your comment bears repeating, so here it is again for our Newbies (and some old-timers)  #10 Thou shalt use the AR search feature to see if anyone else has: answered your question, discussed the topic already, see what others are saying about the issue.

Lane: I've been blessed by the level of content I've found on Active Rain.  The search feature has helped me find stuff I would have gladly paid to find from a seminar.  And it's free!

Esko: Our businesses will benefit from blogging, and our blogs will benefit from keeping the commandments.  Thanks for commenting!

Rebecca:  I'm with you on respect for others.  I can disagree, but you will never find me slamming someone publicly.  I'll send an email!  LOL

Kathy: I don't know what to do about AR Addiction.  Plug it into the Search field at the top of the page, and you'll find lots written about it.

Peggy: You're never a pain!  See Maureen's comment about using the Search feature.  When that doesn't work, email me or call me.  I'm glad to help if I can.

Bob & Carolin:  I don't think it takes more than 10.  What's happening is that it doesn't register your first 10 immediately upon posting the comment.  If you go to your home page, and scroll down on the left hand side, count the number of comments for todays date, and stop at ten--then wait until after midnight (AR time) you'll see that all ten were credited.  I don't know why this is; sometimes they credit right away!

Gary:  thanks for the compliment; I appreciate your comment.  Come back any time.

Bill & Barbara Jo:  I'm glad you caught this one!  Thanks for commenting.

Joan:  the stars are you and the rest of my readers.  I couldn't do it without you, and you've been my encourager since I started.  Hugs and appreciation!

Lisa:  By tomorrow morning, it looks like we will have 50 commandments.  I can't keep up with the comments.  Thanks for stopping by.  See you again soon.

TLW...ROAR:  Thanks for teaching me to reciprocate!  Please edit your comment, and give us a link back to your post The Ten Commandments Of Real Estate.  You'll save us all a ton of time!  Thanks for visiting and commenting.

Elaine:  Thanks for the encouragement!

Cynthia:  We're over 20!  I appreciate you; thanks for being a subscriber.

Steve:  I'm with you on being professional, but have you checked out our group Suthern Thangs?  Some pretty good roadkill recipes there, and you don't get those every day.  In fact, creative minds can tie Roadkill and Real Estate together, and still maintain a semblance of professionalism.  Check out my post Li'l Sarah Cooper and Roadkill.  (And Sarah didn't cancel her subscription to my blog!)

Chris:  Having something constructive to say isn't always easy.  I appreciate your comment, because I find that I'm reading stuff from folks who are a whole lot more knowledgable than I am on a lot of topics.  I find myself posting questions, and getting answers.  That's the cool part of Active Rain.  People give me answers to my questions!

Dan:  Thanks for commenting!  I want people to hear that again:  "Dont fret about what others are writing.  Find your own voice and blog away.  People will connect with the true you."

Brad:  You put in the good word for me with Moses!  I don't know how you got that done, but I sure appreciate it.  Do you have any pull with the minor prophets?

Bill:   Thanks for commenting and being an encouragement to me!  I'm off to see your blog.

GREAT POST.

I've got #9 covered.  This was fun.

Suggestion for #10.  Thou shalt NOT advertise thou self in comments to other's blogs.

I've deleted 5 comments this week because the member who commented placed links to themself in the comment, under the comment and one even had a photo of themself.  This is #1 in the Guidelines for a reason.

I used to send a private e-mail asking the offender to remove their link, but so far only one person did.  The rest just ignored me or argued that they had the right.  I don't send mail anymore. I just delete.

I agree with Jeff's and Lenn's # 10, although I was going to make another suggestion...

Thou shalt encourage new members by commenting on their early blogs.  It's so discoraging to write and have no one comment.

Excellent post, Mike, as always!

I have to agree with Eric and say:

#10 Thou shalt network with others

#11 Thou shalt update their profiles regularly

#12 Thou shalt invite others to join our "family" in the Rain

Charles:  Your comment is organized.  On a Saturday night!  Thanks for 10, 11 and 12!  It's good to see you again on the Rain!

Margaret:  I started commenting on early blogs about a month ago.  A new reader commented on my very first blog.  I was so surprised that I nearly fell off my chair.  And the comment said "I wanted to see where you started."  That was an encouragement, and I've tried to make it a habit to reciprocate.  Thanks for visiting and commenting!

Lenn:  I don't read your blog often enough.  Look for me to fix that, and thanks for commenting.  (I couldn't resist putting your picture in my comment!  LOL You can link back to anything you think would be useful for my readers.)  Thanks again for commenting!
