Hey all you Harry Potter fans in Gwinnett County, the Georgia Board of Education voted to keep Harry Potter on the library shelves in Gwinnett holding that the books are good tools to ignite creativity and encourage students to read.  There have been year-long complaints from a mother who thought that the highly popular series might promote witchcraft in children.

I am sure that Ms. Rowling is deeply grateful to the Georgia Board of Ed and that the teenage wizard will fly once more.

And speaking of Harry Potter, did you know that the series have been challenged 115 times since 2000, making them the most challenged texts of the 21st Century, according to the American Library Association?

I was hoping that would be the outcome Laurie.  I understand the objections some have to the Potter books, and had them myself in the beginning, but I am more and more convinced that perhaps Rowling will one day take her place next to Tolkien and Lewis.

If you are interested in reading more, check out John Granger's book "Looking For God In Harry Potter".  And see what Dave Kopel over at NRO has to say in "Deconstructing Rowling"

Harry Potter is far from being the largest spiritual threat we as parents have  to face, IMHO.

Bill,

Thanks so much for taking the time to post a comment and thanks also for the reading suggestions.

I agree that there are many more threats to spirituality than Harry Potter.

Happy Holidays.
