trust

Trust matters most to me in Family, Friends and Business.

With Family, there's unconditional trust. I have no doubts that my family will be there for me, and each other, until proven wrong, and so far that hasn't happened . My kids put their trust in me, whether they know it or not. They count on me to make sure there's food on the table, clothes on their back, a roof over their head. Sure, it's taken for granted, but deep down there's a built in trust. The same kind that makes them believe that I'll always be there for them, always keep them safe, always be on their side. And they're right.

Friends have a different kind of trust. One that builds up it's strength over time. I have friends that I've known for 20+ years and I'd put my life in their hands. It takes a while for that to happen. They also know I'd do the same for them. I only have a couple friends that I've felt that way with very quickly. I guess I'm lucky in that aspect.

Business and trust is a completely different story. Most of the time clients put their trust in me without really getting to know me. Over time, I earn that trust. If I don't, we won't work together long. And that goes both ways. If I don't trust a client, I'll find someone else to work with. It's that simple.

Trust is a big part of day to day life. Without it the world would be an even bigger mess than it is.

Trust me.

In 2006 I left an independent brokerage I'd been office manager for five years to pursue what I thought was a better opportunity. The man in that brokerage that originally hired me was 80 years old. The older guy on Pawn Stars reminds me of him so much. Anyway, he told me that back when he first became a Realtor, they really did do business on a handshake! The first contract he saw was one page, then they kept adding..now they go from six pages to infinity. Sadly, he died within 6 months after I started working there. I have a feeling I could have learned a lot from him.

You're right. Trust comes in all sorts of "strength" and value depending on the relationship.

Great contest.  Great post.  This is something on which all of us rely as realtors.  Sometimes we deserve it, sometimes realtors don't.  I count myself among the trustworthy.

Eric, Good breakdown on the different areas and levels of trust.  It's the challenge of our business to quickly earn that trust from potential customers, and then not do anything to lose that trust without good reason.

Unfortunately, I have personal experience in family not being there with their trust, love, support, etc. I wouldn't want what happened to me with my family to happen to anyone at all. It's not pleasant.

Eric,

People putting trust in you when they don't even know... yup, it's powerful!  Happens in my industry, too!  I'm happy to not disappoint!

Don, you're right. Some people just don't deserve trust.

Christine, absolutely.

Steve, thanks. Happy New Year to you, too!

BLiz, the worst is when someone loses trust in you for the wrong reasons. Like they listened to their Uncle Fred who sold real estate in the 70's.

Jared, I haven't had any serious fall out with my family. I just need my kids to know what's right and wrong.

Russel, sounds like you have a book waiting to be written.

David, it's definitely powerful, and I do what I can to not disappoint, too.

Trust is something that is certainly hard to earn with new clients and that is why referrals in this business are so important. That gives a level of trust we just can't get from cold calling or internet leads.

Hi ERic - this is a great post, and trust can be difficult to earn with brand new clients (especially internet leads), however I think if they find us to do what we say we are going to do, then trust will be established.
