The upcoming holiday season brings family fun and good times, and it's also that time of year when many turn their thoughts to those less fortunate.

There are several wonderful charitable opportunities coming up to help others in the Seacoast area:

cans of food

Seacoast Local Food Drive - benefits the Seacoast Family Food Pantry here in Portsmouth NH and the Footprints Food Pantry in Kittery Maine.  This food drive is running now through Nov. 17th, and again from Dec. 15 - 22nd.   Seacoast Local and Buy Local programs are heading up this food drive, and donations can be dropped off at any "Buy Local" member business.  You can check www.seacoast-local.org for the list of drop-off sites and the list of foods needed.

Club Finz Sock, Hat, Mitten Drive - this clothing drive is headed up by the local Parrothead Club.  This is their 9th year doing this drive.  If you want to take part, you can meet up at the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company dock in downtown Portsmouth.  The boat pulls away at 7pm, and your donation of socks, hats and mittens is your admission ticket.  These clothing items are given to a variety of local charities that all benefit families and kids in the Seacoast area.

coats, hats, mittens

Momma D's Coat & Toy Drive - for 5 years running, Momma D's Casa di Pasta Restaurant in Portsmouth is a drop-off location for coats, toys and non-perishable foods for needy families in Kittery Maine.  You can drop off your donations at Momma D's starting Nov. 21st.  While you're there, pick up a couple of stars off their tree.  These stars will have clothing and respective sizes for local kids in need.  For more details, call 603-431-4511.

Toys for Tots

~ Toys for Tots - for those wishing to drop off new toys for the 2007 Toys for Tots Christmas Campaign, the drop-off point in Dover NH is the Dover Ice Arena.  New toys are needed for kids from newborn to teenagers, as well as new clothing, diapers, hats, mittens, and blankets.  US Marines will be collecting and distributing all the gifts to the needy families.  For a detailed list of what items are needed, call 603-516-5706.

Your donations to these much-needed charitable drives will be greatly appreciated by the families and children on the receiving end.

Christmas Bells

May your upcoming holidays be wonderful, and may your hearts be full of warmth and good memories with family and friends!

Ann,

What a great post. It's so nice to share this information with others, great job. If everyone helped out just a little, wouldn't things be so much better for all?

You've provided some great informtion, I hope people all over your state of NH  find it helpful and join in the giving spirit.

Hi Lynda - thank you for those nice comments!!  You're so right, if we all helped just a little bit, the world could certainly be that much better for so many.  Even in this challenging market most of us are in, a few cans of food would go a long way for someone in need.  A warm hat, some wool mittens..... a small toy for a child.....

Thanks so much for your comments!

I was surprised to see our new company get involved with a lot of charity work. Just in our office meeting the other day we talked about a few charitable organizations to donate our time and goods too.

Hi Jay - it does help when real estate companies get behind some of these charitable organizations.  I know a number of us in my office are involved in a variety of charity work around the Seacoast.  We also do food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for local families.  For Christmas, we usually adopt 2 families, and provide the entire meals as well as their Christmas gifts.  Plus all the other charitable work that's done all year-long.

Thanks for commenting!

Ann - That's what I love about Christmas and all the giving.  If we all do something...even one thing, it would make all the difference in the world. Thanks for reminding us of the need to reach out!

Hi Bob - you know, that same thought went through my mind as I was writing this post.  I've a feeling that for most people, they just don't think about it because you don't really hear about the clothing and food drives until it gets to be the holiday season.  I know in my office, a number of us are involved in things all year, and for others, the holiday season brings it to the forefront.

Thanks for the comments!

Ann....   these are great little reminders during the holiday season for those less fortunate. Besides, I bet the Christmas scenery around Portsmouth is pleasant, refreshing, relaxing, besides gorgeous.

Hi Jeff - I was hoping this might serve as a reminder for all those charities in all of our communities that need our help, and hopefully it will do just that.

We don't have much in the way of Christmas stuff up around here yet, but when it does go up, it really is very pretty.   Portsmouth is beautiful all the time, and with the Christmas decorations up, it's just that much prettier, especially at night with a very light dusting of snow.  Not that I'm wishing for snow, as I'm not, but that light dusting with the holiday decorations is like frosting on a cake!   ;-)

Ann.... your town reminds me so much of the town my dad grew up in, Two Rivers, WI.  Small town of about 10,000.... but around x-mas time, tons of decorations. I was just in Philly the other night and they just had all of the white lights up and working on the main street, Market street.

In regards to snow... a light dusting does add so much more to it, but for me, I love my 2 feet of snow as one dumping. That is what I wish for every year. Last year was extremely mild, so maybe this year also. My town of Haddonfield, 11,000 residents, does a great job during the holidays. I'll be sharing some pictures and a post when they get things set up.

Jeff - I bet your town will be really pretty, and I'll look forward to seeing your pictures.  I plan to put some up from here as well, when our decorations go up.  I have to say, if it's going to snow, i'd just as soon get some real snow, and then hopefully be done with it for the season.  And if we get that much at once, it's a good reason to stay home and not feel guilty!  I do hope this year's a mild one though.....
