I know others have written about this before, but this is my official moaning about the lack of service in general in our world. If you have a business, any kind of business, and you still care about your customers, and you can relate to your customers, and you can provide excellent service to your customers, you WILL WIN!!!
As many of you know, I have a broken ankle. http://actvra.in/p8h That means I have a cast on my leg/ankle/foot, and I can't put any pressure on my right foot. So I have to do everything with my one good foot. If I need to pick something up, I have to crutch over to where the item is, and then I have to place both crutches against the wall because I cannot lean over if I'm using my crutches. I then place one hand on the wall, furniture, or whatever I can find, and I lean over, pick it up, and stand back up again. Then I need to place whatever I picked up either down on the furniture, or in a bag that I can carry while using the crutches, in a fanny pack or pocket, or I have to throw it to wherever I'm going. To say the least, picking things up is extremely difficult, and I absolutely cannot pick up anything unwieldy and carry it anywhere.
Which brings me to my rant about service. There are two major delivery companies, and while I don't want to say who they are, you can figure it out by the clues UPS and FedEX. I had to order all my Christmas presents this year, so everything had to get delivered by one of these two companies.
If anyone pulls into our driveway, they can see the nice path that heads right to our front door. It's the front door of the house. The place where people enter, visitors can ring the doorbell or knock and have someone answer the door. It's where anyone with a desire to serve the customers would go if they wanted to actually serve the customer.
Well.
Many of the boxes were dropped on the far end of the porch. The truck would pull up, someone would leap from the truck, run to the porch, drop the boxes and run. I can't get the boxes. If it's raining the best I can do is hobble outside, hope I don't fall, and push them with my crutch closer to the house so they don't get too wet.
So I put up a big sign. "PLEASE knock on the door. I am on crutches and will be right there."
Did any delivery company EVER knock? No. Every single box was just plopped wherever, except for the one time I was close enough to the door to see them and I indicated I was on crutches and they needed to bring the stuff up.
Today was the proverbial straw. I had a gift card for a seafood company, and I ordered a dinner to be delivered. (Update: it wasn't a cooked dinner, it was seafood that still needed to be cooked.) Today I called the company because I never received a confirmation of delivery. Yes, don't worry, it's coming. At 2:30, I still hadn't seen anyone, so I checked online.
It said, "Delivered and left at garage."
I WAS HOME!!!! Why would they leave it in the open air, near the garage, when I was there waiting for it? I know why. Because the number of deliveries, time for deliveries, and number of employees probably necessitate fast deliveries. But they also necessitate NO SERVICE. What if I didn't have someone who could bring in the box for me? It said "perishable" all over it. Duh. Just because a signature is not REQUIRED when a package is delivered is no reason not to try to actually deliver the perishable package to a person. All they had to do is walk up the path to the front door and knock. A minute is all that would have taken. Instead, they left a perishable box in the driveway and assumed someone could get it.
I want service to come back. If you are in any business and you deal with any kind of customers, serve them. You will stand head and shoulders above the competition, and your business will THRIVE.
I know I would much rather spend a little more on a company that actually cares about the customers than for a cheap crappy service that leaves packages in the driveway.
Rant over.
50 Comments on Customer Service? Customer Service? Where are you?
The entire family went to Hawaii this year for Christmas - no presents - it was great.
Hope the foot heal up ahead of schedule for you and congrats on the feature.
Hi Kat, I think you need to move to Iowa. We have very accommodating delivery personell here. They ring the door bell and when it's raining they push the packages under the garage door. (The cat's domain and open wide enough to accommodate small to medium packages).
Nice post and an amusing read. I do get your point about customer service. I contacted an online company about new signs at the end of 2011. More than a week later I've decided they don't want my business. Communication sucks.
I love our UPS driver. He knows where I live, where my mother lives and where I work. He delivers to my office when its raining, to the garage when its a huge package, etc. Living in a small town does have its advantages. He is all about service!
Hi Kat--this would even more funnier if it weren't so true. I sent an email yesterday in response to a question from a prospective client. She emailed me back that she was so surprised I answered her within a few hours. She says no one does that anymore. I was pretty baffled by that. I would never of think of running my business any other way. Hope you are off those crutches soon.
I hope that you're able to throw away those crutches soon! What terrible service you've received from those companies. We had many deliveries this December, and all were placed up against the front door plus they rang the doorbell. I can't even imagine the ordeal you had to try to retrieve your packages!! I hope those companies see this and improve their delivery service to your area.
We can totally relate around here! A Team member extraordinaire has been struggling with a complicated foot injury for 6 months and counting.
I am amazed by what she manages to pull off in her condition. Hang in there! I can see it's not easy.
FYI: Most UPS/FedeX delivery people are the same for your area everyday, like your postal service. A quick chat with the drivers about your situation may go a long way in getting a more accommodating result.
Some are better then others of course. Good luck.
Yikes, that's pretty bad. In my neighborhood, they knock all the time before dropping and kicking it to the door.
Joetta- Thank you! I hope so also!
Erica - I missed your post on dog food, but I am definitely going to check it out. That's actually believable in the sense that I've seen this kind of behavior before, but unbelievable because it's wrong.
Phil - I think you are lucky. If they had done that for me, I could have opened the door and just slid them in. Thanks for commenting.
Dan - Thank you and wow, what a great Christmas celebration! I hope you enjoyed the beautiful Hawaiian islands!
Denise - It does sound as though this might be a somewhat localized issue since it does seem some locations are better at servicing customers than mine is. Thanks for sharing.
Joni - WOW, that is amazing service. I'd never use another company if that's the way I was treated. Thanks for commenting.
Janet - I feel the same; how else would we do it? That prospective client may turn into a client just because you were responsive. In fact, I have a client who came to me because they said the last realtor they tried to work with was not responsive. It does make a big difference.
Maureen - Thanks for your comment, and I'm happy you received better service than I did. Thanks for stopping by!
Vanessa - On one occasion I DID tell them. I stood in the door and waved my crutches and on that one occasion they delivered them to me But the next several times, there was no difference. Sigh. Thanks for your comment.
Gabe - Haha, they kick it? Well, at least they knocked!
Kat - very good points made (sorry though it came from BAD experiences) - I like how you mention that if you give great customer service you will stand head and shoulders above the rest (so goes the saying that "customer service is the new marketing") - hope you gain your mobility back again soon! :)
I have to agree that our society IS changing and it is not a good thing but leaving seafood by the garage and not even attempting to get a person at the door ......there is NO excuse for that!
Part of the problem with these deliveries is that the drivers themselves are severely overworked and in order for them to hit every stop in a timely manner some things suffer. In many instances it is the customer service that takes a major hit, the driver is able to squeeze out more time by simply dropping the package wherever and as quickly as they can at each stop. It’s a sad sign off the times when these corporations refuse to staff themselves properly and instead try to squeeze as much production as they can from an existing workforce. In the end, I think posts like yours, the viral video of the fed ex driver tossing a TV over a fence and just complaints in general about these companies costs more than what it would be to hire and staff properly their organizations.
I hope your ankle heals up quickly and you are back to 100%.
Jason
Craig - Thanks for stopping by! Yes, customer service is really the winner today. So few companies do it so it really does make a difference.
Barbara Jo - I agree! Luckily I found out early enough so nothing got wrecked. Gee.
Jason - I agree; it comes down to staffing and training. During the holidays I'm sure it's crazy with the high volume and the new driver's helpers (the elves!). Thanks for commenting.
I'm so glad this post was featured! This needs to be discussed more often...what the heck happened to customer service???? I've noticed the same thing about deliveries....you never see anyone come to the door with a package anymore. They just dump it by the garage or wherever is most convenient for them. Delivery has become a lost art!
Kat, maybe with all the publicity UPS and FedEx got via the youtube videos, they should be more careful. See the video of the delivery guy who dumped the flat panel monitor over the fence? Here in SF they always bring the package to the door and knock. Probably more for the security than anything else.
John - I did see the video of the monitor being dropped over the fence, and the customer was waiting at the front door for the product. That was awful. Thanks for commenting!
Kat, That is why your clients, and mine, and those of others who deliver service, are ours for life.
Marge - Thanks for stopping by! Yes, service is key, and it definitely is true in our business even more so. Have a great weekend!
Our neighbor fell in her back yard and broke her ankle and the same thing happened to her with deliveries. The difference is she had a flight of stairs to her front door. Often our kids would see the packages dropped off at the garage and they would take them up for her, knowing their was no way she would be able to get it. These companies just don't get it anymore. My thought is leaving packages there would have made it even easier for people to drive by and steal it and know one would have known.
Todd - I have stairs also that go up from the path to the front door. You're absolutely correct - leaving them anywhere except right at the front door makes them more susceptible to being lifted. I'm not sure what the solution is, but it sure has been a learning experience!
