This Saturday, January 7, you can join in the 5K Fun Run which benefits the restoration of the Kō'ie'ie Fishpond. 'Ao'ao O Na Loko I'a O Maui (Association of the Fishponds of Maui) along with Valley Isle Road Runners are hosting this run to "Preserve the Fishpond - Preserve the Culture".
The race will start at 8 a.m. at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary on South Kihei Road. Traveling south to Mā'alaea along South Kihei Road, the race will turn by the Lahaina/Kahului intersection and head back to the Sanctuary giving runners a 1.5 beach run. Medals will be awarded for three categories: Men's, Women's and Youth (under 18 years of age).
The cost to enter on race day is $20 per adult and $15 for anyone under the age of 18. All proceeds will benefit the restoration of the Kō'ie'ie Fishpond and the 'Ao'ao O Na Loko I'a O Maui educational and outreach programs. Since 1996 the community has come together to help restore the Kō'ie'ie Fishpond, which has a long history. Work on the restoration began in 2005 and several hundred feet of the walls have been restored. However, funds need to be raised to continue this restoration.
