Have Fun with Pinterest

Recently I have been getting quite a few questions about how to better utilize some of the social media apps that I have been sharing. This week I would like to spend a little time discussing Pinterest. Pinterest is a wonderful new social media site that utilizes the power of visual. Visual communication will become a big player in the way people communicate in the coming years. Sites like Visua.ly and Pinterestare wonderful examples of that effort. While Visua.ly is information graphics, Pinterest is a collection of anything that you want to collect from the web. Men and women both share a lot of fashion pin's on Pinterest, but the site is open for anything. Pinterest does not allow for self promotion, but that doesn't mean that you can't use it show your clients a little about who you are, or what interests you.

As with any new app the challenge for social media users is how to apply the cool things that the app does to, a practical usage. Think about QR codes and how people are using them in totally useless ways. Pinterest is great way to share specific content on your website, blog site etc. Let's dig a little deeper. So on Pinterest you create boards, as you can see from the screen shot below I have boards for "moments in my life", "Fav Places & Spaces", "My Style" etc. When you "pin" something from the internet, you place it on a board, Pinterest makes it easy by adding a "pinit" button on your tools bar, so anywhere you are on the net, just go to pin it, and there it goes to your Pinterest page.

If you click on a particular board it opens up to that board, see my "Favorite Places & Spaces" board below.

Okay, that's all well and good Gerry, but what do I do with my board? From my website GettysburgGerry I have a number of pages that link to different content. Click on locals choice, and see where it takes you, yup you got it, my Pinterest Fav Places & Spaces page. Instead of having to add every pic and description separately, I can now direct people to a collection I already have completed, and it is another link to a relevant site on the web. Lets think in terms of real estate, think you could put together a nice board on a particular neighborhood, complete with pics of schools, homes, parks, shopping centers in the area? The key is to not "sell" on Pinterest, put together something that is going to highlight the neighborhood, not you as a Realtor, remember one of the rules is no self promotion.

Finding creative ways to utilize the millions of apps is part of what I do for my clients, it is part of Social Media Management. Just finding the apps is only part of the puzzle, applying what the app does is the followup. If you are looking for someone to managae your social media presence, then by all means call me, or visit my FB, Twitter, G+ pages, or my website. I always take the time to talk with you to see if what I do can benefit you.

I have to think about this. I'm still hung up about directing people off my site to Pinterest.

Gerry, I have bookmarked this post. Our son and daughter in law have a wonderful blog about their home renovations and Pinterest has picked up one of the pages about organization design. They've had over 10,000 viewers since Pinterest posted their blog. I had to double check the spelling of Pinterest as I see it's been misspelled a few times. Thanks for the good info about the Pinterest app. I already uploaded the Pinterest app on my iPhone.
