New Hampshire First in the Nation Primary - A Bit of History

By
Real Estate Agent with BHG The Masiello Group

New Hampshire First in the Nation PrimaryNew Hampshire has the distinction of holding the First in the Nation Primary and it all started with a small town farmer back in 1913.  He felt he should have the right to vote for the person to represent him and his party at the national convention so he introduced legislation which was passed into law and thus made the way for a primary election.

New Hampshire didn’t become First in the Nation until 1920 when State law required that the New Hampshire primary must be the first in the nation.

Although, New Hampshire has had very little snow this winter, January has brought an avalanche of political advertisements, brochures, door knockers, phone calls, emails, the media, the candidates and their staff.

Don't get snowed by all of the political rhetoric.  The Iowa Caucus has produced some unexpected results and the New Hampshire First in the Nation Primary takes place on January 10 th

I was beginning to wonder how to sort the Fact from the Fiction.   I came across few web sites I found both informative and entertaining.  They certainly helped me discern who was giving the voters a snow job and who was telling the truth!

One site is called FactCheck.org.  This is a non partisan site which is operated by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.  You can find a lot of great information on this site.

The other site I found is called PolitiFact.  PolitifactTM has a wealth of information along with the Truth-o-meter TM which gives you an indication of the truthfulness of a given statement or purported "fact".   This site is a joint project of the St. Petersburg Times of Florida and Congressional Quality.

One of the most important freedoms we have in this Country is the Freedom to Vote.  Hopefully, these sites will help you to get the facts you need to make an informed voting decision and cut through all the snow!

Know how each candidate stands on the issues from the proposed budget cuts,  job creation, climate change, immigration, foreign policy, trade to taxes!

An informed electorate is cornerstone of our great democracy!  Become informed and be sure to vote.  You can find out where to vote by going to this website.  There with be both a Republican and Democratic ballot at each location.

Joan, I think they should all have QR Codes pasted on their foreheads with a spreadsheet of where they stand on EVERYTHING - and with dates when they flipflopped changed positions and how often!

Hi Joan, I dropped over thinking I might have already left a comment here already but although I had read it, I don't see one. I hope business is good and so appreciate the two links you provided and I have bookmarked them so I have quick access. This should be an interesting year leading up to the election. I do feel this is going too be the year for a substantial change in the housing industry, at least it should spell the beginning of a good change. Stay well and have a supper 2012

Hi Joan!  The Politifact site is one that I've been trying to find this year and couldn't, for the life of me, remember it!  Thank you for sharing that site!  Let the truth-finding begin (if we truly ever DO know the truth)!  ;-)

Joan, New Mexico became a state one year after New Hampshire had their first primary in a small town in 1913. This year New Mexico is 100 years old. Now I will search to see when we had our first primary. I migrated here from DC which is still not a state!

Joan, fascinating history of New Hampshire being the first state to vote.  I love how we get your returns because so many caring people turn out at midnight to vote.  The KEY to that is SO MANY PEOPLE turn out to vote.  I've read that the % of voters in New Hampshire residents is higher than any other state.  I'll have to track that down and send it to you.

Joan --- it's interesting to read the history of New Hampshire and its first in the nation status but also to see nearly two and half months of comments and see how things have changed since January.   These are very interesting times to say the least.
