Are You Sacrificing Great for Good?

Well, I finally did it.  After 14 years of getting up at O'dark thirty, I finally gave up my M,W,F Spinning® classes.  I have loved it from day one, but my current schedule is making it harder and harder to keep up the pace and still stay on top of my business.  Sometimes you've got to sacrifice one good thing to preserve another good thing.  It's not right or wrong, it just is what it is.

For those who are unfamiliar with Spinning®, it is an indoor cycling program taught in a group format on a specially designed stationary bike.  Most major fitness equipment providers produce some type of indoor cycling bike today.  If you belong to a gym, I'm sure you have some type of indoor cycling program to check out, and please do.

Giving up my class was hard.  It took me over a year to finally walk away from it.  I had developed some great relationships with some of the most amazing people I've ever met.  As a team, we tackled some pretty big goals both inside and outside of the gym, and I had a blast doing it.  I trust that those adventures will continue.

What I know is that even a good thing can get in the way of other equally or maybe even more important things.  Sometimes, the thing we've always done might not get us to where we need to go.  Even though it's a positive thing - it might not be the right thing for the time.

So, as you enter into a new year, stop for a moment and look at your life.  Are the activities in your life, both business and non-business, taking you to the place you want to be December 31, 2012.  Yes?  Great!  No?  What are you going to do about it.

For me, giving up my morning Spinning® class is a great loss in my life, but my loss in one area will turn into a far greater gain in other areas.  Sometimes in life we have to play a balancing act between good and great.  Are you sacrificing great for good?  Oh, and don't worry about me, I have a gym in my house.  I'll still hit it.

You are such a positive influence Mike, and a great inspiration to so many of us.  So right my friend.  I'm sure you'll miss your spinning classes but will be rewarded in so many other ways in 2012.

Hi Mike

Great way to frame a change in schedule

as business ramps up, or a parent is sick, or many other circumstances happen, we have to change what we do and when we do it

Thanks for sharing

Phil

Fortunately, Deborah, I have a lot of gym equipment in my home and office.  So, I can't get away from it totally.  I can just work it into my schedule on my time.

Thank you, Roger.  I'm looking forward to positive changes this year.  I'll miss my buddies at 5:30 am, but they're in good hands.  Have a great weekend!

So true, Phil.  Life throws lots of curve balls.  Some are good and some not.  It's all in how we swing, isn't it?

Mike, The continual fight.  Only so many hours in a day, and more things to accomplish than can be done without sacrificing something from the list.

Mike, great post, I wrote similar one about my personal goal on yoga 2012. Been practicing vinyasa yoga for few years but have not been able to master a upside down pose (handstand, headstand and etc) in the middle of the room. So... I'll be putting my effort in master it this year.

That's the challenge, Bliz.  I do my workouts on the run now, and so far it's OK.  We'll see what I look like Dec 31st.  Could be ugly.  8-)

That's great advice, Edward.

Good for you, Eileen.  I love yoga, but I keep it simple.  The best to you in that effort.  You'll have to post about it when you succeed.

Good Morning Mike,  Sometimes it is hard to give something up for something else.  Does this mean that you are going to be sleeping in a extra 10 minutes per day?

Mike - Emerson said that no matter what new and wonderful thing comes into your life, you will always sacrifice something and he was a smart man. I used to be a spinner and was a personal trainer when I went back to collage. Loved it! I don't make it to the gym much anymore either and take my Lucy for a run in the woods - that way I'm mulit-taking and we both get a workout in! Sorry you have to give it up because I know the relationships you can form at the gym - you count on seeing your friends and share a passion!

Sharing what I'm passionate about will be my biggest regret, Kristine.  I had a personal training and Spinning studio for 8 yrs.  I loved it, but the exact same thing happened.  As business increased, I had to let it go.  I was recruited to teach Spinning at a new facility in town, and it was perfect.  I just showed up and taught.  The economy crashed, and our business model changed.  Now, it's starting to move in a new direction again, and we've learned how to make it in this economy.  So, time for another change.  I do love walking my big dopey dog.  He loves to take walks too.  So, I'll workout at home, I'll continue cycling outside and inside on my Spinner and I'll walk the dog.  It will work out.  Thanks for dropping by!

Mike, you had me worry all the way to the end. I thought you gave exercise all together!

I have been spinning for 10 years myself. I love it. However, I did slow down a bit in order to now include a 'Cross-Fit" program. I love it!

Being active keeps my brain sharp for my business.

In your case, I will say change is good. But stay active! And a very Healthy and Happy New Year 2012!

Thanks, Lydie.  I'll definitely miss it, and I will sub from time to time, but duty calls.  I have made sure I have surrounded myself with equipment for those moments I have available to exercise.  You can't tell if my office is an office or a gym.  8-)  Have a great weekend!

Mike I went through a major overhaul last spring - simply too many activities and not enough time or energy.  A balanced life is always my goal!   Sounds like you made a GREAT choice....

Thanks, Anna.  It was time.  I need more time to take care of more important things.  There will always be another gym rat waiting for a job.  So, off we go into a new world.  8-)  Have a great Friday!

The best investment one can make is to join an expensive gym...go there early in the morning when all the big hitters are working out and pass out cards and tell them what you do. They are usually impressed with others who take time to work out while it is still dark out.

conversely the worst place to go to network is a bar. Never tell them you work in real estate while holding an alcoholic drink.
