Well, I finally did it. After 14 years of getting up at O'dark thirty, I finally gave up my M,W,F Spinning® classes. I have loved it from day one, but my current schedule is making it harder and harder to keep up the pace and still stay on top of my business. Sometimes you've got to sacrifice one good thing to preserve another good thing. It's not right or wrong, it just is what it is.
For those who are unfamiliar with Spinning®, it is an indoor cycling program taught in a group format on a specially designed stationary bike. Most major fitness equipment providers produce some type of indoor cycling bike today. If you belong to a gym, I'm sure you have some type of indoor cycling program to check out, and please do.
Giving up my class was hard. It took me over a year to finally walk away from it. I had developed some great relationships with some of the most amazing people I've ever met. As a team, we tackled some pretty big goals both inside and outside of the gym, and I had a blast doing it. I trust that those adventures will continue.
What I know is that even a good thing can get in the way of other equally or maybe even more important things. Sometimes, the thing we've always done might not get us to where we need to go. Even though it's a positive thing - it might not be the right thing for the time.
So, as you enter into a new year, stop for a moment and look at your life. Are the activities in your life, both business and non-business, taking you to the place you want to be December 31, 2012. Yes? Great! No? What are you going to do about it.
For me, giving up my morning Spinning® class is a great loss in my life, but my loss in one area will turn into a far greater gain in other areas. Sometimes in life we have to play a balancing act between good and great. Are you sacrificing great for good? Oh, and don't worry about me, I have a gym in my house. I'll still hit it.
