Yeah, I remember that Trust guy. He was something else - seemed like he was everywhere. You couldn't do anything without him being involved, and just having him there made everyone comfortable and happy.
We sure don't see him much these days, and I, for one, sure miss having him around. Why, I remember my grandmother investing her whole life savings in General Motors and GE - ol' Trust made that possible and it couldn't have worked out better. Can you imagine anyone today investing their entire life savings in any big corporation? And when my dad needed to borrow all that money from the bank to start his business, there was Trust again, helping to make it happen. Well, ol' Trust sure ain't hanging around any banks these days, that's for sure.
We grew up with him always being around - when we'd sit around the TV at night listening to Walter Cronkite tell it the way it was, Trust was sitting right there with us, helping us understand our place in the world. He was with us at school, helping us pay attention to our teachers. Nowadays, without him anywhere to be found, it's hard to make heads or tails out of anything you see or hear.
Now that I think about it, he must have been involved with almost all of our institutions, helping to make them work right and keeping everything running smoothly. I guess we never understood how important he was to everything we cared about until he stopped coming around.
It seems like he started showing up a lot less when we started that business with his buddies Truth and Honesty. I don't think he liked it when we made Truth all fuzzy and conditional, and Honesty a lot less important. When we decided that we could get along better without those two getting in the way so much, there just didn't seem to be a good place for ol' Trust anymore.
Well, I'm sure I don't need to tell you that we're not doing so well without those guys. We need to get them back here, to help us make things right - them, and all those other ones we ran off.
And I know things are a mess right now, but I believe there are some things we could do - no, nothing really big, because things don't work like that any more. But little individual things. Maybe if each of us tried really hard to remember all those guys, and the things they did, and worked really hard to make a place for them in each of our own worlds, and in the way we dealt with others, they would start coming around more. And maybe it would catch on, and we could get things on the road back to being right.
