Dear readers,
Have you noticed the trend to Web-based applications? It seems we are returning to the 70's when I grew up with computers. As users, we sat at a dumb terminal and all of the programs and data were on a mainframe somewhere.
We moved away from that over time, buying software for each individual machine, and MAYBE using the Internet to move the data around.
Now we are back. Sure, there are advantages. You can access Active Rain, Top Producer, and our MLXchange from ANY Internet computer, anywhere. I remember the Top Producer salesman saying that I could access my database from France. Great thought in concept, but if I'm in France I hope I have other things to occupy my mind.
Why am I thinking of this right now? Well, Active Rain is down for a while yesterday due to maintenance, and Top Producer won't load this morning due to maintenance.
I also fear the Internet that we have grown to rely on so much, can actually be down for extended periods with just one cut cable. Just this year, a cable strike off Taiwan knocked out the Internet for several days in parts of Asia. Their financial markets didn't appreciate it too much. Add to that, these DATA cables are carrying a lot more than Internet traffic these days.
I wonder where we'll be in 2017?
Blue skies,
Sam White
