SERENDIPITY - MAKING PEOPLE SMILE

Someone today mentioned their pleasure in smiling at strangers to try to make them smile, and I told them about the “game” I play – trying to win a smile from someone who looks really grumpy.

That made me think of a time I almost didn’t succeed.   A big crowd of tired, frustrated people lined the corridors of an airport near Christmas time – flights delayed, schedules messed up, children fussy.   Everyone fussy.   No one smiled.   I finally caught the eye of a young woman  across the corridor and down a way, and we both smiled.

She soon came over and told me about her game – same as mine.   We had a pleasant visit while we waited, and waited, and waited.   A couple of hours later, we discovered that our assigned seats were together.

When we were finally in the air, I told her that I was on the way to see my parents, and that my mother had advanced Alzheimers.    She had lost her mother to it, we shared experiences, and she consoled me by telling me about a period of clarity at the end that made it easier.    I never saw her again, but I remember her still.

Sometimes the serendipities, the coincidences, are just that - "isn't that interesting" events. Sometimes, they do seem like "God-incidents".     That stranger's reassuring conversation meant a lot to me at a rough time.

When I was picking the lively brain of Joni Staples about starting a group, I used this as the most recent example that came to mind.   She'd been through Alzheimers in her family also.

Mary, I try to do the same thing with smiles.  It is such fun to try to turn someone's day around. It's pretty powerful to be able to do that at an airport over a holiday!

And I lost my dad five years ago to Alzheimer's, or at least some form of dementia.  Every once in a while, he would have a moment of clarity that was so precious.

Patricia, isn't it a wonderful thing to do.   I can't feel down when I can make someone else smile.   I'm sorry about your dad - it's a tough thing to go through.   I'm a hospice volunteer now and I'm dellighted that my 98-eight-year-old current "patient" has an incredible memory and a lot of interesting things to talk about.

I hope you'll join the Serendipity group.   I think it's going to be fun.

I work in a middle school, also, and am determined to smile through the day. Sadly, I often get comments like "why do you always have to smile?". Apparantly, some kids find it insulting if I appear happy when they aren't!

Gretchen, it's a shame kids would feel that way.  I do sometimes feel a little guilty about being as happy as I ajm most of the time.  I'm more blessed than I deserve to be.    Smile anyway.

Hi Mary - I thought I was the only one who did that - my own little secret pleasure.  And now I find that there are more of us who set out to get people to smile.  I think that most folks who seem grumpy have simply had a bad day and no one has smiled at them.

I have an elderly friend who is an expert at this.   Once when he was in front of me at the grocery store, the clerk said to me, "We all just love that little man."    He radiates joy.   Maybe that's the secret - it's not just a smile; it's a way of looking at life that can be contagious.

Smiling seems to be on everyone's mind.  The minister's daily note today had this quotation:Christine Huppert made this comment, one that seems to agree perfectly with the life Christ teaches us to live: "Be nice and smile to everyone you meet. You don't know what they are going through, and they may need that smile. And treasure it."

Hi Mary, I must admit, I need to smile more, sometimes I just get stuck in my head and forget that there are others around me.  I will make this a 2012 game, to remind myself to smile and then get others to smile back!

Kathy, it does wonders for me when I'm fretting about something, which is rare because I'm richly blessed.   I;m having fun sharing other serendipities.   When you have time, please look at www.activerain.com/blogs/marysheridan  to see some others.   I just added one that mentioned the names of several friends in different places who ended up in a multiple-links serendipity, and I'm sending them messages.  Collecting serendipities is almost as satisfying as making people smile.

If things like this happen to you, come join the new Serendipity group!
