Mohonk Mountain Light
view BIG version

Stand Tall | Be Strong | Though Everything Crumbles | Be on The Lookout for Better Times

It's early morning when I head out for the airport. I cross the Tappan Zee Bridge and make my way North.
I'm meeting my pilot for an 8am photo flight covering several locations East and West of the Hudson River.

I've seen the forecast, plotted locations, verified with clients and my gear is good to go. As I anticipated, the sun is UP and ON. My first location, just off the airport, is in the bag already. The lighting and sun angle are perfect for the shoot - just as I have planned.

We cross the Hudson River and make our way to New Paltz, climbing as we go, to prepare for the foothills and mountains. In the distance, the Catskill Mountains, still many miles away, are coming into view as giant waves of blue shadows towering over the Shawangunk Ridge ahead.

We turn north when we see fog spilling and rising out of the valley on the south end of the ridge. Fog,climbing to the heavens to become Clouds in the warming, but still chilled fall sky.

I'm beginning to worry about my shoot now. Are my properties at this elevation really socked in with Fog?! I did not anticipate this?!

As we clear the ridge, I see that the fog has pushed to the south; rising now above, and moving behind us to the east.

When I glance again into the clearing sky ahead, I see the Skytop Tower at the Mohonk Mountain Preserve bathed in Mountain Light from the sun filtering through the rising fog.

And I am reminded

Stand Tall | Be Strong | Though Everything Crumbles | Be on the Look Out for Better Times

On the other side of the valley the sun is strong, and the sky is clear. My remaining locations go well - just as I had planned.

Best Wishes in 2012 Everyone!

Andre - spectacular shot, I'm so glad you are including the BIG versions!! I'd love to see you post these photos in a google+ album and then it would enter the G+ news feed. You'd get a LOT more visitors to your posts I'm sure. Don't post a a link since you are currently members only and the thumbnail will not work. Post as a photo and as the first comment on the photo post, but the backlink to the AR page for the AR members to follow. (just my two cents!) :)

Thanks Craig! Did you feel like you were doing the flying?

Posted to G+ as advised above. Thanks for giving me half of your two cents!

Hi Andre. Looks like you had a very successful flight today for your shots at the Hudson River area. This is a very nice shot of Skytop Tower at Mohonk.

Hey Jerry - I wish I was flying today! It's almost 60 and sunny here in NY. This one's from the archives. It's amazing what you can find on old hard drives sometimes ;)

Andre - it so cool to see photos of places I've been to and love from the air! You take amazing photos and I love seeing these places from a new perspective - they look so different, yet the same.

Hi Kristine - From the air it is easier to see how everything is connected. And the higher you go the more you realize this. Astronauts often comment that the earth is free of borders and boundaries when viewed from space.

Mohonk is one of my favorite place in this region. It was an amazing experience to fly it. And it's equally amazing to hike.

Thank you!
