Another interesting thing I heard on BT last week was the results of another European study that indicated that general brain degeneration occurs earlier than had been previously thought.
Prevalent wisdom had human brain degeneration resulting in measurable loss when we are in our 60's, but the results of a recent study indicated that that loss might be measurable as early as 45. Brain degeneration starts much earlier, as young adults, but is virtually imperceptible until later in life.
Although this loss is partly a result of natural aging and genetics, there are factors that are within our control.
Activities and Health Care that improves the vascular system will generally also improve or reduces our "brain drain".
1) Exercise and reduction of fat in our diet (to recommended levels - too little fat in our diets can have negative effects) can be beneficial.
2) Use your brain. Keep on challenging yourself, continually learn new things.
3) There is evidence that the fatty fish oils found in fish like Salmon, Halibut, Cod, Tuna, Trout, Sardines etc are good for your brain. A rule of thumb we have tried to live with is to have two - three ounce servings of fish at least twice a week. There is some evidence of increased mercury levels in the larger ocean fish, so do your own research and/or discuss this with your health professional before choosing to change your diet.
4) Gingko Biloba and Co-Enzyme Q-10 are also thought to have properties beneficial to our brains.
5) Reduce STRESS in your life. Stress negatively affects many components of our lives and can affect our brains.
Like any new Health regimen, due diligence is in order. Research the topic for yourself and talk to your medical health practitioner before adopting any changes to your diet, supplements or physical activity.
Our choices can have consequences, and making "better" choices might result in "better" consequences, it is all up to us.
Chris, I guess grandma was right to insist on my having a spoonful of cod liver oil every morning after all. I think in western cultures we have made a mistake by seperating mental health from physical health as if they were two seperate unrelated things. We are rediscovering how intertwined they are.
Hi Chris - Salmon is also a superfood. You need to make sure you are eating wild salmon not farmed salmon, according to various articles I have read.
This is great information that I could have used prior to turning 45. I guess I was just lucky in that I always exercised, limited saturated fat and ate lots of tuna and salmon.
This is great advice Chris - there are so many things we can do to keep our brains active! Thx for the great reminder.
They actually have made big improvements on farm raised salmon...feed them a lot better than they used to. So it is ok to eat wild alaskan and Atlantic Salmon. larger fish like Tuna take longer to mature and contain mercury. Salmon grow faster and do not.
Great advice Chris, age is only a number.
Greetings from Innerloop Houston Texas
Malcolm, my father made me do that also... and we had more fish during exam periods also... You are so right, our health is all intertwined... we are only as strong as our weakest link
Marc, we tend to eat a lot of what they call "trout salmon"... it is a pink fish and also has a lot of the fatty fish oils that are so good for us. I have heard both sides regarding farming... the process is still in its relative infancy, and I hope they address the issues of density.
Edward, our parents and grandparents were generally better at this than we are...
Debbie, limiting bad fats, and saturated fats are a habit I need to improve on.
The mercury issue with Tuna is similar the the DDT issue with eagles in the 80's, as they are higher up the food chain, Ed, and I do think they are making great strides with fish farming. As with all things, standards are not equal in all parts of the world.
Linda, a 100 year old made the news in Toronto this year for completing a marathon... he only started running at 89!
They have started feeding better food at Atlantic Salmon fish farms. Feed high in omega 3s.
I have also heard some great things about eating cumin and tumeric. India has low incidences of alzheimer disease. You can take supplements or just eat Indian food.
