Holiday Balance: Creating a Special Holiday Season

My MomMy priority this year and one that will keep me positive for a long time to come: My mom is in her 91st year. I plan to spend holiday time with her up in Connecticut. Last year I arrived at her home a couple of days before Christmas and spent Christmas Eve night alone with her. Fortunately, Santa did not forget us and we had a fun morning checking all our gifts before joining many family members for the day. What a treat it was. I would love more of the same this year. We had many rocky years and these mellow, relaxed years are such a gift not only for me but definitely for my mom. She and I have fun together. These memories will last for the rest of my life.

Jim

I really cannot call my husband, Jim, a close second. He is my now and forever, second to none. The rest of my family also knows how dear they are to me all year long. I will continue to combine real estate with a healthy dose of family time. Bring on the soccer games, field hockey, plays, award ceremonies, horse shows, let's just grab a Frosty time...it's all manna for me.

Fortunately, a number of years ago we all decided that individual gifts were not necessary or even desired. We had as much fun gathering together at Thanksgiving without a wrapped package in sight. We now donate to causes that have meaning for us. Gifts to one another are limited to very personal, thoughtful items. Jim and I will be donating to Hero Miles and Fisher House to assist injured veterans plus Doctors Without Borders. I cannot say enough about these organizations. To help those who have helped make this a better world is the least Jim and I can do.

70th B-day

All the grandchildren will be receiving a photo taken on my 70th birthday in May with them lined up in the same position as one taken for Jim's 78th birthday party 2½ years ago. They each have their first photo hanging in their bedroom. Hopefully they will treasure the new one of the grandparents, cousins, and sibling. Special books will be selected for each child depending on their age and interest. Newberry and Caldecott winners provide a good place to find great books. Amazon.com does the rest. The older generation will also receive personal framed photos and books.

Not having to spend countless hours stewing over what gifts to buy for each member of our large extended family, and then actually doing the shopping and all the gift-wrapping leaves me with plenty of time to take care of business.

Our office will be having an AGENT APPRECIATION LUNCHEON on December 13th. We invite agents that we have had transactions with during the year. It's a very nice way to get together and show our appreciation for the assistance they provided in making the year a successful year. A great idea and appropriately named.

ALL OF MY CLIENTS will have a relaxed and unstressed REALTOR® who is actually looking forward to the holidays and not dreading them. Making it about family, friends, and others that matter to us goes a long way in easing the tension and keeping the focus on what is meaningful in our lives.

Happy and Safe Holidays to All.

Hi Elaine...thanks for your comment.  I'm glad you share my feeling towards family.  Here's wishing you and yours a great holiday season also.

Kathleen,

What a beautiful post. Looks like you have a beautiful family. I loved your idea of the agents appreciation luncheon.

Hi Lynda...Didn't mean to give the impression that it was my idea.  The two owners of the RE/MAX office where I work came up with that (perhaps they learned of it from RE/MAX International).  And yes, I do think it is a very nice idea.  If your office is not too large perhaps you can try it also.  It's a fun time for everyone.

Beautiful post!  I also emailed you in case you want to spruce this up and add correct title and tags for the contest. Thanks for your Positive Attitude!

Hi Kathleen, I read this this morning, but looks like I forgot to comment, now it is in the contest :) :) One of the things I remembered from my earlier reading was the Agent Appreciation....but for Agents you had done transactions with.  that is a wonderful idea.

Nice family you have, and glad that you have the time to enjoy them, and vice versa......

Hi Kathy...Yes, I entered the contest.  Just found out there was one.  I just entered another one about an inspiring song.  Just happened to run into information on that one.  Do you know how you get the information?  Is there one site or do you learn about them only if you belong to a particular group that's holding it?

The Agent Appreciation Luncheon is a nice way to thank our fellow Realtors.  Perhaps your company might consider doing it, or you could always do it with a couple of other agents.

Thanks for the comments about my family.  I'm definitely a family woman!!!

Kathleen- that's kind of a hard question....Each Group has their own criteria, and periodically have contests.  This particular contest was advertised more than a month ago......but if you didn't read the Poster (Sally)  you could easily have missed it.

One member is advertising their own things in a particular Group, but basically if you go into the Groups you can find the info.  I know the guy that started the song Group just made a Group for advertising these contests, but not all of us go there.  My Group is e-PRO, and since it is not the fun type it is doubtful there will be any contest soon.

Localism should have another contest......Laurie Manny runs that one. I will get some links together for you.....that might help. Sallys Group is a good one, and any Group read the Guidelines on the left side bar, as you could have your Post deleted for posting in the wrong place, or for not following the Guidelines......

Hope this helped a little, and remind me and I will get you the links to whatever you want :)

Kathy...I never expected this much help.  I just had a chance to read your comment and you not only provided the information I wanted but I'm sure you've helped others understand the contest system better.  It's so hard to keep up with all the posts.  I am finding that there are some people I really try to catch.

Kathleen, thanks for entering the Holiday Balance contest.  Since I am one of the judges of the contest, I will reserve my detailed comments until after the ballots have been counted.  Just wanted to let you know that I had stopped by to read your post.

Brian...Thanks.  I will look forward to reading your comment after, no matter the outcome.  It was just good to enter.  Made me reflect although these thoughts are always with me.

Hi Kathleen, I am just back to reading all the other posts. I particularly didn't want to read them till after I wrote my own. Keeps one clear and focused to make each our posts personal for us.

This was very well written and your sentiments about family are so much appreciated. It is the wonderful and loving memories of our past that is our today and future. Yours is and will remain ever bright!

Kathleen, thanks again for your post and for supporting the Holiday Balance contest.  We received so many wonderful entries, yours included.  Thanks for sharing your personal story and family priorities.  The picture of your beautiful mother at the top right corner brought a smile to my face.  You and her certainly look very much alike.  My wife's grandmother is 91 and we just visited with her Friday night.  She's always happy to see us or anyone and seems to be perpetually happy and loves a good laugh.  I'm sure your Mom is the same way.

11/18/2007 06:46 AM by Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate (RE/MAX Allegiance)

William...Thanks for the kind words.  The best thing about the contests for me, is it gets me thinking (that's sometimes a tough assignment) and I'm happy with the thoughts that come to me.

Brian...Please read what I just wrote to William.  Your wife is very fortunate, so are my children and their cousins plus their children.  My mom is a true gift for all of us.  I'm so happy you understand.

Cheers, Kathleen

An agent appreciation luncheon is a great way to interact with the other local realtors.  Great idea!  I hope you have a great visit with your mom over the holidays.  It has been too long since I have been able to spend a Christmas with my mom.  I am the only child who lives further than 2 miles away from my mom, and I'm three states away.  She gets to spend time with my sisters, brothers and their grandkids.  I used to travel there every other year, but my kids have been enjoying spending christmas in their own house.  Hopefully next year!  I truly hope you enjoy and it sounds as though you will!
