Is it all about the money and the desire to flaunt what one can do with such abundance? Is it a vengeful attitude? Or is it something more basic and common sense than that, something that the average Florida Realtor deals with everyday?
Just because a home has a huge sticker price it doesn't mean it is worth what it is marketed for. The long and short of what appears to have transpired (see article) is that there wasn't a proper home inspection done on the house.
Some simple inspections like a WDO (Wood Destroying Organisms) These inspections look for Termites, Ants, Woodboaring beetles, and wood decaying fungi, (according to the home inspectors that I've worked with). Another inspection that is done here in Florida is a 4 Point Inspection to determine the safety factors of the home should a hurricane bear down in that location.
The house Elin bought was built in the 1920's which pretty much leaves the house wide open for WDO & dated building standards below current hurricane codes.
A simple solution could have saved $12,000,000. Get an expert HOME INSPECTION! According to the article, the house was infested with termites. You may not be purchasing a home for $12 million but it might as well be if you have to tear the thing down and start over.
Do yourself a favor, don't throw your money away on a home that you could have invested a few more dollars on and been properly informed about its condition. Home inspections usually cost only a few hundred dollars, IT IS ALWAYS recommended & well worth it!
