13 Comments on How I Saved $1,000 in 30 Days
What a great exercise. Everybody should do this, not just first time buyers. While some of your ideas are one-time-only actions, some of the others will bring savings to you month after month.
What a novel idea - increase revenue and cut spending. Why hasn't anybody suggested that to the Federal government?

Thanks for the note, Jim.
I realize some of it cannot be repeated for another month, however the main point is how much it changes your thinking. I needed a completely different mindset to do this for a month! That alone told me something about being a spoiled brat and wastefulness. Most of us could use a dose of reality about our wastefulness!

These are great cutbacks and money makers for anyone.... not just first time homebuyers. :) You've given all a great way to look at making a little extra in a tough economy.
Lindsey,
Thank you for the kind words.
I am just amazed at how I used to think about things before I did this exercise. My attitude about letting $30 slip away here and there way ridiculous. It mounts up so quickly. And every time you pick up your car keys, it costs waaaaay more than you think.
Paula
Pretty smart advice. Not everyone can do all of this, but most of it can be done by anyone. Thanks, Paula.
Don, Point is OFFER TO DO WHAT ARE GOOD AT. You might not earn the going rate, but it isn't a permanent job, and you get IMMEDIATE income.
There are lots of things I wish I could hire someone for at an inexpensive rate. At $100 a day any skilled work is a bargain. I would gladly pay $100 for a day of wood framing work (rough carpentry) for my outdoor projects. I have list of about 10 things involving my garden and garden shed that could be knocked out in a day by someone who knows how to work power tools,
Or someone to set fence posts and put up some wood fence panels.
My handyman won't work a full day, but if he did, he would charge $300 a day.
You get the picture. Some people are good with dogs. You could offer to take in a dog for 3 or 4 days at your home, and charge $100 for that. Beats a kennel. Just brainstorming. Hey, that's why I love Actie Rain!
THANK YOU FOR COMMENTING!
Paula, I love people who think outside the box and are self starters! I do many of those things, like riding my bike instead of driving certain places and its better all the way round, I get excercise and don't have to pay to park! Win Win! Eating at home is better for me too, because I know what's in the food I make and how much fat or salt etc there is...
Paula welcome to AR. Love the cost saving ideas presented here, and many could benefit from such an exercise.
Welcome to ActiveRain. Best wishes for continued success.
Have an outstanding week and be sure to have your camera in hand to capture those special moments.
