Put the Hammer Down Now

The other day I had an interestingly weird conversation with a fellow broker/friend.  It started out fine, she was kind of upbeat and excited about the new year and our market improving... but it quickly took an ugly turn. After listening to her beat herself up over and over it got to be quite annoying.  I was thinking   'why are you talking about yourself so negatively and how can I get you to shift this craziness?  I made several attempts to turn the conversation around which went nowhere. She just kept going on and on about what a loser she is and how she screwed up so bad this past few years and she had many people telling her how terrible she was including her family.

Hey You - Put the Hammer Down Now!www.phoenixpropertyshoppe.com

For those of you that know me, as a coach I sometimes do things in an unconventional way if there's a need to get somebody's attention. This was no exception.  I stood up and said  ok kind of spoke real loud,  Hey You - Put the Hammer Down Now! She looked at me - with surprise - and just sat there looking at me.  Ok great - I now had her attention away from the waaa waaa waaa is me mode and perhaps we could get her pointed in a direction that would work so much better for her, me and everybody else in her life.

I asked her point blank - Are you hearing yourself?  Why are you beating yourself up so badly?  She didn't say much at first so I asked her another question? You can't possibly think beating yourself is going to make things better, do you?  She truly does know better - she's a very smart broker and has been highly successful for years. Sure the last few years have been tough on all of us but she sure has done her best, in my opinion.

I shared with her an idea a shrink friend of mine told me about many years ago. - If I remember correctly it's called neuro-linguistic programming. She said that by taking a physical action your brain is more likely to make a shift and pay attention, rather than simply telling yourself something with no action involved. I then held up my arm, pretending I had a hammer beating myself up in the head... and then put the hammer down by my side. OUCH THAT HURTS!

I suggested she try it a couple of times on the spot. She did and got the picture fast...and even added a few giggles too (yes we both probably looked quite silly) LOL. I then suggested that every time she caught herself beating herself up again to immediately take the action...and shift her train of thought and a new brain pattern would develop.  I don't know why she decided to go all ballistic on herself (which was so not deserved) and honestly I really didn't care about the details. She's a kind, caring friend and I just wanted to be a postive friend like she's been to me for years.

My guess is she'll be picking the hammer up and putting it down for a few days or so - until she doesn't need to pick it up and use it anymore.

Hey You - Put the Hammer Down! You deserve better!

I'm hard on myself but tend to keep it to myself. It's what keeps me driven!

Anna - Thanks for the post.  It appears this person suffers from very low self esteem.

LOL.. I read this thinking it would be an interesting article about someone doing repairs on a property they shouldn't have. Being a property inspector, I have witnessed this form of improper "hammering" as well though. There are quite a few agents out there that seem to be way too hard on themselves! I hope that they all see this blog!

Anna~You personify what a "great coach" is all about. You gave her a simple lesson in life, with tools to change her behavior in a way that was humorous, easy to understand and life-changing. The way this was written also makes me further understand why you are the Bananatude kinda gal that we all love!

I'm not sure that was pure NLP there. As long as it got her out of the pity party she was attending.

Sometimes people just need to have their perspective shifted for them . . .

Somehow something tells me we have been there and done that. All of us need to vent and have an ear to help a friend. Perhaps that is what she found in you.

Anna ~ I am so glad I read your post.  You have made me look at myself and have given me some good pointers....and you don't even know me!  Thanks!

Perhaps a squeeze ball or small punching back would give her another target too.

Dear Anna,

That was very kind of you. Sometimes, you need to stop a few times to see, that it feels better, when you stop.

Hi Anna, I think the best thing to do is excuse yourself and walk away before the other person drags you down.

What a perfect pattern interrupt! Sounds like she was in a rut and didn't know how to get out, so much so that she didn't realize what she was doing was more harm than good. It's so true that taking action can make the difference if we find ourselves in that spot. You did fabulous and definitely helped this gal out!

Fun blog, not what I expected (something about an amateur handy person who got in over their head). Made me think about new ways to bounce out of my internal dialogue when Stress or Worry creep in. Thanks!

Robyn - so true.

Gail - she's fine.  Overstress by holidays and tons of family in town.  Temporay - and not like her one bit. I've known her for many years.

Christine - she is and she's laughing about it now!  She owes me big time!

Allison - it works!

Randy - we're both fortunate to be friends.  And I 100% agree 2012 is rocking already!

Julie - yes and the quicker they get out of that mindset the better.  Yuck!

Bryan - really?  You're so excellent at all you do!

Eric - agreed.

Lottie - thanks - and she is to me!

Tni - glad to hear you're doing better.  I know you work short sales like I do and some days it seems to go backwards (that's when I take a break!).  I know if we just keep working at it all it will work out somehow.  Hang in there!

Jennifer - absolutely. It's like a broker recored and it needs to gone.  Thanks!

Woody - if not they should have coffee with me. That'll pull them out of the crazy cycle.

Barbara - better to just not pick the darn thing up in the first place. That is the BEST position!!

Kimo - you got it!

Carolyn - thanks on both counts!

Derrick - good luck!

Brad - not at all. She's number 1 or close to it in so many areas.  Just flat out exhausted from the holidays.

Craig - a couple of other inspectors thought the same thing!  Gotta love that perspective. And it's interesting that you notice agents that beat themselves up too much. Tell em to drop the hammer!! That ought to make them pay attention!

Why thank you Gayle!  I appreciate your kind words - and you too!!

Lyn - close enough it did the trick!

Mike it's all about perception - all of it.

Winston - a few minutes is fine....but it had to stop....seriously.

Dawn that's what makes the Active Rain community so valuable - its members and all the sharing we do.  Keep on Believing in You!

Gene - hmmm is that your method!  Whatever works!!

Dorte - yes we sure do, don't we.

Bob - no - that wouldn't be my style with a dear friend.  If it went on and on....well that would be different.

Sylvie - that's what it was exactly.  And hey it that a little shitsu?  I love shitsus!

MC - super - use anytime!  It's free!!

Anthony - some do just not this one.   The drama kings and greens are more like vampires!

Joy - I am!  And it's nice to see your smiling face!!

WOW Anna!

Your shrink friend is amazing! I think I am rather guilty of this myself. Kinda doubting my abilities at times...wondering why I've not been more successful, etc. etc. etc.

I love this idea.

I might take it just a step further tho.....I've got a really cool tool kit from one of the condos I bought as an investment and have since lost (bam bam bam) but I think I'm going to take that small hammer out and actually lay it right under my monitor.  I think it will motive me to keep focused, and looking ahead, instead of behind me to much.

Ok, now YOU are my shrink friend!

Happy New Year!

Anna,  What a good friend you are.  It's so easy to beat ourselves up and so self destructive.  That was a great idea on your part.  I hope your friend is thinking more positively these days.
