The holidays are coming and if your family is anything like mine that means everything revolves around food!

I love this time of year, we work hard so this time of year is the reward. Gatherings with friends and family celebrations all around, its easy to get caught up in the moment and loose track of what you have worked hard to maintain all year long.

How do you stay balanced.....

Staying focused on your goals will keep you on track. Don't skip your workouts, even when things get crazy busy this is your time it will keep your stress level down so you can focus on taking care of business. Remember to eat healthy foods, preparation is key you need energy to get you through the day.

You just started this new healthy lifestyle, how do you maintain it around the holidays.

  • Only you can control what you put in your body
  • You work out everyday to feel good about yourself
  • Plan ahead, bring your low fat dishes & share
  • Stay away from the buffet table
  • Keep focused on your goals

For me self control is what keeps me focused, it helps if you have a supportive family. My family understands and expects me to bring a veggie tray, turkey meatballs, and sugar free pudding pie! They are also trained they know if the party is at my house they need to bring their own butter! ( we laugh about it)

Its easy to be tempted and once in a while treat yourself, just know that others will try to convince you its okay to eat its the holidays. But be careful those calories add up and before you know it you have gained 10lbs and you will be working it off the rest of the winter.

Remember only you can accomplish your goals, and only you know whats best for you!

Excellent reminder Suzanne.  I also continue to remind myself to Enjoy all things but in moderation.  This allows me to endulge my passions but within healthy limits.

Turkey Meatbally, Yummy!  Moderation is key, although I don't always practice it:-(  Good reminders though Suzanne.

Suzanne... Moderation is certainly the key and going overboard in the low fat direction can be somewhat problematic from what I have seen.  For future reference.... Late afternoon is not the best time to post something like this.... I am starving!!!!   LOL

Suzanne: You'd be soooo proud of me....I physically worked HARD in my mom's valley yesterday...and I worked out shampooing my carpet (in between blogging)...I slept good last night....lost a couple of pounds during the last week...and hopefully on my way to recovery (again) from toooo much junk food.  Moderation (like Dan said) has got to be the key....he's nuts....haha....but I agree that I will keep "relapsing" if I cut it out "cold turkey" (no pun intended :)

Thanks for the post, I think one of the biggest reasons you eat more when you're socializing is that restaurants and parties tend to offer an overabundance of delicious food, making it more difficult to limit yourself to reasonable portions.

Dan,

The picture is for you! I prefer to call it a lifestyle, not a diet!

Sally,

You know you worked hard when you sleep good! I am very proud a couple of pounds a week is a healthy rate to lose! Small changes will keep you from relapsing, change doesn't happen overnight. :)

Elaine,

You are sooo right, I never said it was easy. Its a mind game put to the challenge! :)

THOMAS-

Now you sound like my hubby, you two would get along great! ;)

Suzanne-Another wonderful post!  I keep praying that I will take a deep breath and slow down long enough to make sure I take care of me.  Everybody and everything else seems so to be so much more important to me.  That's horrible.  How am I going to help everybody else if there is no me? :)

Suzanne........yeah, I know, I know. BUT I LOVE to eat all of those yummy foods. Aren't we allowed a treat at least a few times a year? Seriously, I can hardly wait until I fix those hot rolls, turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy.......ymmmmmmmmm. THEN, I'll get back to my regular diet until Christmas when I make the fudge, cookies, breads, etc. THEN, after the New Year, I'll definitely get back to my regular meals......:-)

Hi Teri,

I have learned the hard way, its easy to over indulge around the holidays. You should be fine everything in moderation....I absolutely love fudge (but my thighs don't) LOL! ;)

Suzanne, thanks again for your entry in the Holiday Balance contest.  Healthy lifestyle often goes to pot for many during the holiday season with all the parties, food, drink, and merriment.  In the frenzy of it all, people forget their health and then wake up January 1st and make a resolution to lose weight, work out more, etc.  Thanks for providing some inspiration for people to keep up their healthy routine throughout the holidays.  Such a critical issue for so many.

I never entered this contest because I have zero holiday balance.  I eat pretty clean throughout the rest of the year (to the point of fanaticism in the past), but I absolutely murder a holiday spread.  Some people have a cheat day once a week, but I have a cheat season.  I'm just not good at moderation in anything.  When I'm living clean, I do so religiously.  When I relax my guidelines, they get relaxed all the way.  I blog at 4 in the morning.  I drink coffee all day long.  I'm always addicted to something, whether my job, family, fitness, whatever.  It's great to read how well-rounded people operate and cope with the craziness of the holidays.  Thanks, Suzanne.

Hi Brian,

I love some of these contest, they really get us inspired to write. Many forget their healthy ways around the holidays, hopefully we can stay balanced! :)

Hi Paul,

You are sooo funny, I like that you give yourself a whole season (sounds like you work pretty hard for that) insead of a day. Everyone is different and what works for me, may not for you. I have learned the hardway, its easier to put it on then to take it off. Thanks for stopping by! :)
