The best scam email yet

I was wondering how long it would take for the scammers to think of this one. I received an email from the IRS stating that I was owed a refund of some $240 plus dollars and to go the their website, enter in my social security number, plus my debit card account number and pin to collect. The link was branded to irs.gov/xxx

Looks pretty good, doesn't it? I even went to the site and found this:

Its a perfect clone of the actual IRS website. All of the links point back to the same page, so hopefully anyone that fell for it and did visit the site, figured out it was a scam. I'm betting they are making their way around the US. Just delete them. I've already reported them to the IRS via the phising email link.

This has been around for awhile. Good for you for recognizing what it was.

I saw that earlier. Man they are trying everything. I always call the source or try to go to the correct website and never trust the links that are in the email.

Jacqulyn, did you report the scam to spam@uce.gov? Or is there a specific phishing or IRS link you used?

I too received an email saying I had a refund waiting for me and thought at the time it was odd. Particularly since I had recently gone to my accountant so I felt somewhat sure nothing was do. With that said, I did call and ask him about it and he too confirmed it as a scam.. I am always cautious especially over the internet.

Thanks for posting this. It's really crazy these hoaxes that are out there. One question that would cross my mind is WHY would they contact me by e-mail. My e-mail address is not on any of my tax returns. Hopefully that will keep some innocent people from filling in their personal information.

I used the email address on the IRS website to report it.
