LinkedIn - Do You Pay Attention to Who You Are Accepting?

By
Real Estate Agent with SHAHAR Management

be careful Lately I have been getting an increasing number of LinkedIn connection requests.  As long as I know the person, no problem.  If I don't know them they generally don't get accepted unless there is a way of checking them out and verifying.

Today I got one and I quickly clicked on it to look at the profile like I always do because I thought I recognized the name and was going to accept it because I was in a hurry.  As I skimmed the profile (because again I thought it was someone I knew) this is what I saw among other things:

CEO of xxxx xxxxx's life

Greater New York City Area

Real Estate

EDUCATION

Phd in persistence

19xx- 2011

Now maybe this is the way this person wants their profile to read or maybe they are thinking no one will bother and will just accept all invites.  This got me to thinking that maybe I need to go back and look a little closer at some of the other invites I have accepted to be on the safe side.

Too cautious?  Some may say yes some may say no.  When you aren't getting the full information from someone whom you are giving it to I would say you can never be too cautious.  I'm just sayin....!

Debra, I agree with you about being very careful about who we connect with. We must protect the business we have worked so hard to build.

Debra,

I agree with you 100%.  I exercise the same caution on Twitter, and especially Facebook.  It may take a few extra minutes to do that, but it is worth it. A

I was thinking of writing a post about this same subject.  Glad you did!! I always look people up on their profile if I don't know who they are.  I don't trust the "33 people in common" either.  I think some people just accept the invite without checking them out.  PhD in Persistance . . . oh brother.  LOL

I had a scary (for me) experience with a LinkedIn message today. It came from a woman whose name I did not recognize and a line to link to for a message she "left on LinkedIn". When I clicked on it, it took me to a Canadian pharmaceutical site. It really looked like a LinkedIn message but I guess you can fake anything--or send anything through that medium maybe?

Debra, I am more cautious on facebook than linked in. There is just more about my personal life there.

That said, I try to send a personal note to each new contact on either one, wether its someone I previously knew, or a new connection.

How true!  Either today or yesterday I don't remember which I received a request from someone on Twitter.  I didn't recognized the name and curiosity got the better of me so I clicked on the invitation to read more.  What they invited me to do and the language would curl your hair, needless to say I hit the delete button and emptied the trash.  If I don't know the person I hit the delete button.

David- So true!

Alex- You are so right!

Carla- I agree with you.  I used to trust the "friends in common" until one day I asked a friend who someone was and she said "I don't know..."  And that was the end of that!

Carolyn- Wow that is odd!

Endre- When I am in a rush I just save them for later these days.

George- You probably should - some of the stuff I have been seeing lately is very strange.

Karen- Excellent idea!

Donald- Also a good idea!

Dee- Do you see my hair?  I got the same one!  LMAO!

Laura- Oh that is too bad.... :-(

I agree with you Debra. Once someone is part of my network, it says something about me to potential clients.  I want the people in my network to be an asset to me and any potential clients.
