The History of Atlantis, Florida Real Estate
The property was called Mulberry Farms and sat on 834 acres. It was owned by Frank J. & Julia Deal Lewis. They were parents of the former Senator Philip D. Lewis. The farm consisted of cattle, orange groves, various citrus trees, chickens, silk worms for commercial use, and of course mulberry trees.
The family sold the farm in 1958 to Nathan Hunt and Paul Kintz, along with two other parcels along Lantana Road. The City of Atlantiswas then created by charter in 1959. Atlantis was one of the first country club communities, and known for the place to live.
The city borders the Lake Worth Drainage (L-14) Canal on the north, Lantana road to the south, Military Trail to the west, and Congress Avenue to the east. Ten percent of the property is zoned commercial with various shopping and the award winning JFK Medical Center.
The resident’s mainly were retirees back in the start of the development, though today they vary of all ages. Of the nearly 2000 residents, Atlantis got its reputation as where all the doctors and lawyers lived.
Today (2012) the Real estate prices are stable with the diversification of custom homes, villas, and condominiums. Prices did not get affected like other gated communities that have cookie cutter housing. If you are considering moving to the center of Palm Beach County, check what Atlantis has to offer.
