Today's PR tip to help kick back at the negative reporting the media gives real estate.
Turn around the negative media that comes with the default of unqualified loans. It's not the fault of realtors that lenders made bad decisions. As a matter of fact, every one of those loans was made knowing full well that the interest rates would climb and that a certain percentage of these mortgages would default.
The banks and lending companies knew exactly how many would go bust and the dates it would happen. They also knew how much money they'd make on the way through. When the giants report Billions of $ in losses, they aren't giving the whole picture about how much they made. They aren't giants because they make mistakes.
Now, the media is making a fortune selling advertising as they spew out every negative thing they can say about the real estate market. They have nothing to lose. They sell more papers, magazines, and air time if they paint a dismal picture or the market.
The fact is, there are thousands more realtors than there are journalists, maybe millions (and if anyone knows how many realtors there are in the U.S., I'd appreciate the feedback on this) -- so let's team up and turn the media upside down. We can't even afford the exposure through advertising that we can get with free PR.
Today's tip -- invite to lunch some key media players with some key influencers from lending institutions and real estate. Give a fun presentation about how well everything is going for the economy and what a good time it is to buy a house. Throw in a couple of side remarks about the cost of waiting until the market picks up .... and there you have it -- a juicy story for this evening's news. Every journalist wants a free lunch with the movers and shakers, and you know how to put it together.
We don't have to turn the media around on a national basis... if every one of us does this locally, it will become a wave that the networks cannot ignore.
AND -- Think of the BIG favor you'll be doing for the homeowners - both buyers and sellers -- and for yourself!!!!

One more thought ... how about a group of realtors sponsoring a lunch for the chamber ... invite the right people to be on a panel of experts ... make sure these "experts" see things the way you do and will deliver a positive message ... let the press know this is going to be a hot shot, insiders look at the market. They'll be surprised by the good news and put it on the air and in print.
