When I came to Christ 35 years ago, I was like a sponge. I wanted everything God wanted to pour into me, and I was always so amazed at how He did it. It was an exciting time.
One of the things I noticed early on was that I sensed God speaking to me. It was a little weird because I never had any other internal voices speaking to me, but His voice was so clear and specific. I never once had that still small voice tell me anything that was incorrect or against Scripture.
Over a lifetime of serving God, that voice has become more and more honed to my ear. When I was young though, it was something I questioned and sometimes completely missed what God was trying to tell me. So, in His infinite patience with me, He would do things to demonstrate that He was speaking to me.
One of the most dramatic events was on a flight from Chicago to Washington, D.C. I was flying home for Christmas while attending Bible college, and we had a layover in Chicago. I always carried a little green notebook that I scribbled down everything I thought God was telling me. I would transcribe the conversation and then date it. I wanted to make sure that if God was truly talking to me that I could confirm what He said.
On this trip, we were waiting at the gate before departing. The plane had emptied out about 70%. So, there were only a few of us on it. I stood up to stretch my legs, and I heard this, "Psst, psst," and I turned around to see a little old lady motioning for me to come back to where she was.
"Yes, ma'am?" She said, "Would you fly with me to Washington?" I said, "Sure," and I grabbed my stuff and moved to her row. When we ascended to about 30,000 feet we started chatting. About half way through the flight she said she knew I carried a notebook of the things God spoke to me.
Imagine my surprise. Then she systematically started telling everything that was in my book, page by page. She never missed an entry. Wow! I was stunned. She was dead on every entry, and I was convinced that God was speaking to me. What an amazing display of the Father's willingness to help me with my concerns. That evening they were put to rest.
I've never questioned God since then, and on more than one occasion that still small voice has kept me alive and out of danger. I'm all ears.
Friends, your Heavenly Father wishes to communicate with you. Don't let that scare you. There are ways to know the voice of God. We can discuss that in another blog, but suffice to say, that like any loving Father, He wants to commune with His kids, and He will lead and guide you where He wants you to go in this life if you will listen.
