Somewhere in the past few years, we have lost the ability to spell.  We are so dependent upon automated spell checking software, that, when it doesn't work, we do not seem to have the ability to find our own mistakes and make corrections.

This morning I was looking at homes in another area of the country on REALTORS.ca.  Okay, I may no longer be an agent but I am still a buyer and will, one day, want to be Seller.  I found a fantastic looking home, priced well over $500,000 and decided to do some window shopping through the photos.  Now, on the positive side, the listing agent had actually added information to each photo (many lazier agents skip doing this work).  On the negative side, the spell check must not have been available and the agent had neither the skills to find their own mistakes or did not take the time to write the text in a software package that would have found the errors.  While spelling was the key area, grammar would have run a close second on things the agent could have worked on before listing the home on a national website.  I am surprised that the Sellers have not insisted that changes be made.   Here are just some of the things that I tripped over when looking at the listing.:

Oppulence is in the in ensuite.

Makes for great Quest Quarters.  (Now here is where I think the magnifying glass could come in handy.)

Bath that is with yet a third full bath.

Birds eye view.

If the Sellers take any time to look at the listing, and almost 100% of them do, then they may wonder why they are paying over $25,000 to sell their home to an agent who apparently cannot take the time to check his or her work!!!!  Buyers, finding those mistakes are going to wonder if the room measurements are correct and if any of the additional information actually relates to the property being sold.  The lack of attention may result in a missed sale.

Finding these mistakes just magnifies sloppy work.  Attention is needed in ALL the details.

John:  Clients pay a lot of money to have their home listed and sold.  You would think agents could take a little time to proof read their material or have someone in the office do it for them.

Thanks Josh.

Chuck:  I just have to remember to use the spell check more often - even when making comments on AR.

Errors like these would make me crazy!  They really make the agents look careless and lazy, not very professional at all.

Sharon:  I so agree.   When I saw the mention of the Quest Quarters I started laughing and then I started noticing all of the others.  Why haven't the Sellers said something?

I'm a Scrabble player and consider myself a good speller, so this makes me crazy.

Roger:   I started to worry about the birds with only the one eye and the luxurious but not quiet opulent  in or inn with an en suite. Dear me.....

Ha! You have hit on one of my pet peeves! I particularly love it when someone writes a blog post or comment suggesting that they are a "superior" agent, and the writing is full of spelling and grammatical errors! Really? How can you possibly excel in this profession without at least some attention to detail?

Valerie, this agent obviously didn't take the time to proof read his or her work. Then again, maybe they just can't spell and have never heard of spell check LOL. Now, where is that spell check button ....

Hi Valerie--I am betting the agents who can't spell aren't capable of reading your post either.  I have seen this so many times that I wonder if the sellers even bother to look at their listings.  I saw one recently where the agent not only had the incorrect subdivision listed but that was also misspelled.

Valerie.  There was one agent at my old office who might rank as the world's worst speller.  He did a great job selling BUT he worked in a niche area where, I guess, what you wrote did not matter.  Still, he was not the majority.

Janice.  Sometimes, when I am in a hurry i skip the spell check.  I almost always seem to regret it later.

Christine.  Me too.

Janet.  Is bad spelling a product of the current school system?

I am shocked at what I read.  And, we send the sellers the listing in their email before we even leave the property at the listing!  Not bad for efficient.  And, they can see not only our speed and efficiency, but IF we have made an error, and we rarely do, we can correct it immediately.

Thanks for a great rant.

Don:  It started out as an observation but, as you noted, it turned into a rant.  Why wouldn't you expect good spelling if you are paying thousands of dollars for marketing our home?  Ooops - there I go again.

People make mistakes, but this many should be apparent.  Someone is just not paying attention, not proofing, not doing a thorough job.  I am trying to teach this important skill to my son right now and it is very hard!

Coral:  I am the world's worst proofreader of my own work but can usually spot a mistake in other's work no problem.  I think it is because we see what we think we wrote not what is actually on the paper.

I am constantly surprised by the poor spelling and also the fact that the salesppeople didn't read over what they wrote.

Valery, this doen't drive me crazy because I know that it is hard to deal with the second language. I can't spell, seriously. Thanks god there is a spell check pretty much on every website, if not I always type in the word document to make sure. Hand writing notes make me very nervous especially if some one is looking LOL. I always ask my son to edit my post for grammar. I do not think I would want to deal with the agent who doesn't bother to check what he is publishing. I've had my website for more than 2 years now and still find some typos. BTW Roger Mucci was kind enough to offer his help.

Anna.  From Russian to English is a huge leap.  You do amazing work.  Now....  See, you are smart enough to know where you need help and you get it.
