Inspired by Kimberly Wester's post What a Stager Really needs... Stamina, I wanted to add something else.

I have found that an important part of starting your own business is to surround your self with positive people. Try to group together with like minded people.

One of my biggest challenges in the beginning was the lack of support from my family, my husband and my friends. Everyone thought my business and ideas were good, but that was where it ended. My husband had a "show me the money" mentality. He never came out and said that but when I would come home from a consultation he would ask "How did it go?" I quickly began to realize that translated to "How much did you make?"

What I did not get from my family, I sought out in the business world. My current business partner and I were a great support for each other - we had the same goals. I aligned myself with other business owners that were willing to cheer me on - as was I willing to cheer them on. This helped to keep my spirits high and my goals attainable.

I was lucky enough to find a Realtor who wanted success for his business as much as I wanted success for mine. He knew that staging would set him apart from other Realtors, he knew he needed to step up his services to compete with others. He was the stepping stone I needed.

I am very excited to be able to host the Michigan Roundtable and thank you to those who have already responded. This is the perfect opportunity to surround your self with like minded people. I think that is why Stage it Forward has commanded such a huge following... the people here get it. That is something that I think Stagers desperately need is to know they are not talking to a brick wall. We all have the support of each other.

I was able to persevere and have gained the support from my family and my husband. But if you find yourself alone on a raft in the middle of the ocean... seek and surround your self with people who think like you.

Cari,
So true, so true! I thankfully have a very supportive husband - he actually encouraged me to start my staging business. I have also joined a networking group called BNI. We meet once a week to talk about our businesses and refer business to each other. I get more pumped up on Thursdays then any other day. To speak with a room full of people who want to see you succeed and actually help you is awesome.

Cari, I couldn't agree with you more!  I too get the "show me the money" look...but that's ok. Sometimes I think it's healthier to keep your muse outside of the family.  I don't know what I'd do without my network of business friends!  It's all about balance!

Anthea - I'm going to my first BNI mtg tomorrow am.  I figure the must be a super dedicated group if they can regularly meet at 7am.  They assured me there would be lots of coffee.  My nanny is not as excited as me about this...she deserves a gold star for coming in early tomorrow!

Cari - You have no idea how excited I am that I INSPIRED you to write a post!  I think you should only write when you are inspired because it shows in your work and you did a great job!

I am lucky enough to have a great support system within my family as well as within the industry (if not in my own territory), so it never occured to me that others may not have the same.  Thank goodness yours has come around.

Anthea, I joined a networking group who had "modeled" themselves after BNI, but was less expensive. It was a pretty stagnent group and when I decided to stop wasting my time, I told them they were stagnent and they need to refocus their own goals and decide where they wanted their business to go. It wasn't going anywhere because of that group. They disbanded shortly after I left.

I believe, believe, believe in the BNI concept because, you are right, if they are going to be there everyweek at 7am and don't forget about the financial investment - then those people are serious. I cannot find someone willing to watch and get my 3 kids ready for school that early.

But people swear by BNI so have fun!

Susan, I hope the BNI thing can work for you, it is important to have a cheering section.

Kimberly, yes thank you for spurring my thought process. As far as my support system, no one has ever boo-hooed me, but I never had the cheering section. My Mom would always pass along my pictures to my Aunt like "Look at Cari at her dance recital" but that was about it.

But as they say "the strong will survive"! Stamina!

Cari, your post is excellent.  When my partner and I first started our business there were a lot of naysayers - some of them family.  Like you we boosted each other's spirits and just kept on trudging along.  This year the family have become believers and I have found AR which is the best supporting family of all.  Thank you for the post.  Betty

Great post!  I am lucky to have support NOW...but in the beginning it was tough.  It took awhile for my friends and family to "get it." AR has also been my lifesaver!

I have been invited to join a BNI group.  After reading your comment I will investigate this group further.  Thanks.

Cari,

Great post pointing out the need to be around positive, supportive people....if your family isn't, as you said you need to find others who are!  It makes such a difference to surround yourself with like-minded people.  I'm lucky to have found great support with other stagers who share the same goals and we encourage each other.

Cari, YOU GO GIRL!  I have the same kind of familial support going on here.  Don't they realize it takes time to build the business?  And while that is going on, the money is the last thing on our minds.  Its all about the marketing isn't it?  Glad you got a realtor on your side.  I'm still waiting for my "patron" to materialize.  It will happen!

Thank you Betty, trudging along is a great visual for the beginning of a staging career. It implies hard work - which it is. Now that I have a business partner, I wish I had one all along, she is invaluable to me... you are lucky.

Julianna - you are awesome too! When I first started in IRIS -way back I believed in the camradere that they promoted, it was so great to have people there for you.

Janice, I think you will like BNI, but like everything do your research. Just because your immediate local group is available doesn't mean they will be the right fit for you, see who the other members in the group are, give them a call and ask for imput before you invest the money.

Maureen, my family is getting better. At least they do say they are proud of my accomplishments. You are very fortunate.

Terry, we call it landing the big whale! You'll get yours too. Looks like we all have found a great support system here though!

Ok, so I made it to my first BNI meeting this am!  Boy, 7am is early!  While I felt it's a great fit - this group is primarily entrepreneurs - I don't know if I can commit to every meeting...you can only miss 3 weekly meetings over 6 months.  W/little kids at home, I have to align the planets to go anywhere outside of normal nanny-hours.  But the experience was great, and has got me thinking about other proactive ways to network in the time I do have available.

And I must give a "shout out" to all of you I've met in the Rain!  You may not realize it, but the enouragement and ideas from this talented group is so motivating for those of us flying without a net!  Ok...group hug everyone!  LOL

"But as they say "the strong will survive"! Stamina!"

Sometimes I get tired of the uphill battle in staging but then I get some rest & come out fighting.

AR is my support system - thanks all. It good to see that we  all are experiencing like things.

I am going whale hunting!!!

As a Realtor, I understand the importance of staging.  The house must be priced well and staged perfectly to sell in this market.

Jeff or Lisa... Well said! Staging isn't everything, proper pricing and a strong Realtor make it happen!

I hope I didn't offend with the whale reference, but I think everyone on AR knows what it means to have a client who makes things happen for them and how essential that relationship is.

That said... Kathleen, happy hunting!

Cari, I tried to get into a BNI group here but they already had someone in my "field" as a member.  Apparently you can't have more than one or two.  The other nearby group meets at 7am.  I can't function till at least 9!  So I've decided to stick with my SBA women's group.  And its FREE!

Cari,
Is there a local BNI group that meets at lunch time? Or maybe you can be the catalyst to start one.

Terry, What can you tell us about your SBA women's group? I find the SBA web site very valuable. Is the group about networking or something else?

Anthea, I am pretty sure that most all the BNI"S are am (at least around here) And there are other similar groups that model after BNI but I checked into who was participating in those groups and it didn't seem like a good fit. (Is that rude?)

A couple of people and I are trying to start a more focused group of networking. Gathering a group that somehow relates to the RE industry... Realtor, stager, mortgage, painter, cleaner etc. Our thoughts are simple. We all have our own businesses. I often get calls from homeowners before they list because they want to get their home ready before they market it. Of course you get the question do you know of a painter.

Well, the painter has to get the same questions What color should I choose? Well, I work with a lovely decorator who can help you select colors etc.

Like minded people.
