What a delightful and interesting view from our vehicle!

Bear sculptures Hwy 36 W

We were just cruisin' along Hwy 36 West in White County Arkansas between Rosebud and Quitman Arkansas and gazed to the side of the road and found a bear family,  I think they are bears but they may just be critters.  We turned into the driveway and snapped the picture and nothing chased us or begged us for food and no human shot at us.  They appear to be carved from tree trunks or perhaps they have been carved elsewhere and placed on tree trunks.  However they are made, they made a good blog picture!

Hey, I really like these...we have been through there but I didn't see them either.  I was real excited this year when we went to Craig, CO...they have an entire park full of very detailed wooden sculptures made from trees...eagles, angles, you name it...all over town there are even more.  They told me that they have a special time of the year when folks come from all over with their sculptures...I am simply amazed and now I find out that I didn't have to go that far at all...leave it to Ms. Barbara to let us know that everything we need is right near home.

Debbie, there is so much to see out there!  I love the sculptures.

Mary, chain saws scare me.  I will never do chain-saw sculpting.  Promise.

Charles, I was searching for Nutsy all over that field and didn't see him at all.  Have you done something drastic to my godson??

Anita, I haven't seen your comment. What entry did you write it on? In any case, even if it got lost forever, it's nice to know someone is reading my blog. :D

Here's the bear truth.

These bears were carved by my cousin Larry Carter. I have his permission to tell about the carvings. He has a large cedar grove on his 20 acres and when a tree dies, he cuts it about 5 feet above the ground and starts carving the trunk until a bear or some other critter emerges.

The place where he grew up has been kept on the property and each October he hosts a Humble cousin's reunion. His grandmother was my great grandmother's sister. There is a generation between us.

Here's my dear Paula Anne standing by the mama bear with cub last October.

We always have a hay ride and here's Paula Anne cutting up a little.

Don, what a perfect blog for remembering our Paula!  Those pictures are so good and remind us all of how much fun the two of you had together!

Does the cousin actually carve them himself?  With a chainsaw?  Amazing.

Larry was in Eureka Springs one time and saw wood carvings of bears and said, " I think I can  do that".

Don, so he does them with a chain saw?  Is that him in the picture?

I guess I needed to make the pic larger. That's Paula Anne standing by the eagle. The pic is from 2007.

Larry's land is leased out to farmers who plant corn or sorgum. That's corn in background. Larry and Donna Carter own a hardware store in Shirley, AR.

I pass right by that hardware store when we drive from Greers Ferry to Elkins.  I'll stop in next time and look around.  I'll throw out your name, Don, and see what happens.

Mary, it was just a short thing in the food section.  Don pointed it out to me.  I had not noticed.

Hello Barbara and YES this is a real carving, two of the people at the bottom of the sculpture are my wife and daughter. This museum is located in Willow Creek California approx 80 miles east of Eureka California on the Pacific coast. Willow Creek will be having it's 52nd annual (BIGFOOT) parade, reason ... there have been more Bigfoot sightings around Willow Creek then anywhere in the world.

Google Willow Creek and Robert (Vegas Bob) Swetz and take a look at my photos & videos ... ;o)
