Where Oh Where Did Customer Service GO?

I can tell you where it is not.  That would be what I received this weekend.  Sit back my friends and let me spin you a tale of the goofiest weekend I have ever enjoyed in customer service.

The tale starts on Friday Morning, I am scheduled to pick up a van from a car rental agency that the Scuba Store that I teach for rented for me.  I have the written confirmation that I am to arrive approximately at 11 in the morning.  When I arrive there is a gentleman filling out some paper work and no one behind the counter, no big deal, I think the counter person is out getting this guys car.  After about 5 minutes or so, the guy said to me that there was no one working there and I might want to call the number on the little hard to read sign.  Confused, but I call and the rental agent tells me that he is with the van and that it needed an oil change and it just went into the shop and he should be done shortly.  Ok, I think no big deal; another 30 minutes or so and it is close to lunch so my partner goes and grabs us something to eat while we wait.  45 minutes later, no rental agent.  So my partner calls the agent and is informed that he is on another errand with a truck for another customer and that the van we are waiting for is at the rental office.  Ok, is there someone else that can get this van for us, we have to load up and drive close to 3 hours to the college that we are teaching at this weekend.  No, no one else is available.  Can we come pick you up while you wait for this other truck to be service?  No that wont work either.  Can we call the manager?  No she is working and the rental agent has the cell phone. Now the attitude starts; besides the rental agent tells my partner, you were to pick it up at 8 this morning and I am only required to wait an hour.  WHAT?  Our confirmation says 11!!!!  It is now after 12:30 and we are way behind schedule and I am getting a little, shall we say angry.

So, we leave the car rental place and head for a part of town where there is a Budget and a Uhaul right across the street from each other.  We head to Uhaul, because they have 2 smaller trucks on their lot that look perfect for what we need.  But, those are rented and we wind up with the next size up.  I never thought this truck would make the 350 mile round trip, talk about a piece of dung.

So, we finally reach the college barely on time.  We have 12 wonderful students and 2 for a refresher course, so a total of 14.  With 3 instructors it was a lot of fun for all.  The students got more personal attention and they all did so well in the water that we got more free time to swim with the scuba tanks.

Now for the final blow of the weekend.  When we returned the truck, we commented on how poorly it runs and the counter guy said they KNOW.  Corporate won't let them get rid of it.  So, I ask him you keep renting it out hoping it breaks down and strands someone? He just smiles.

You got to be kidding me!!!!!

I get frustrated with the amount of money i spend at gas stations and grocery stores,
at how little they say hello at the counter or in line.

We all need to use the power of the foot. When you get bad service WALKOUT and go somewhere else, otherwise it will go on forever.

Joe... so sad.... but this happens so often in any type of business. It's called draining it till it's 110% dead and or useless. Some people and businesses are great at customer service, some aren't. And when it happens to you, you just wonder.

On another note, are you giving scuba lessons also?

Jeff yes it is sad and frustrating and not to even mention the lack of work ethic displayed by so many.  On the other note, just finished my Dive Master Certification.  Not much diving in Western Colorado, but there is great diving a short plane ride away
