Near record highs have been reported for the 2011 Corn and Soybean harvests according to the USDA!
The corn crop in the state stood at 1.54 Billion bushels..that is 1,540,000,000 bushels!! The average yield per acre was 160 bushels per acre. This was actually down 5% from 2010 but the number of acres planted to corn was the highest since 1933 coming in at 9.6 million acres.
Soybeans also had a great year having their third highest total ever despite losing about 5% of total acres this crop season. The bean total came in at 258 million bushel harvested from 4.83 million acres with an average yield of 53.5 bushel.
On the down side of the numbers...Sorghum had its lowest number of acres since 1937 and only produced 6.6 million bushels.
Hay took a double whammy in 2010 having an 11% reduction in crop on 8% fewer acres. Alfalfa lost 13% from 2010 numbers...these are significant because of the drought south of Nebraska and the lost opportunities to help with those customers.
Overall, late nice dry weather helped the corn and soybeans but may have prevented a final cutting on hay and alfalfa or at least diminished the quantities.
As always...the Nebraska farmer is resiient and it is nearing the time to prepare for the 2012 crop season. Good Luck!
