As we interact and watch people, we draw conclusions as to whether or not they are trustworthy. Everyone has a different opinion of what "trust" means and how it is measured.
Here are some of the things I look for in a trustworthy person:
1. Are they honest in small matters?
If someone will tell a "little" lie to cover a small matter, then they are more likely to lie when the consequences are big. If someone can cheat or steal, and then easily dismiss their behavior by saying, "It's no big deal", they will find it much easier to justify their actions when the stakes are higher.
2. Is their speech sincere?
Does this person act friendly and completely agreeable while face-to-face with someone, and then criticize and ridicule that same person when he or she is out of sight? Are they only saying what they believe the other person wants to hear? If they speak this way to others then I cannot trust they will be anymore sincere with me.
3. Do they keep their word?
Does this person make promises they do not intend to keep? Do they say they will do something by a certain time, but only deliver excuses?
4. Are they fair when dealing with others?
Does this person look out for the interests of others, or does this person have selfish motives. I cannot trust someone whose interests are always self-serving.
5. Can they admit mistakes?
None of us are perfect, and we all make mistakes, but a person who can come forward to admit a mistake rather than trying to cover it up or pass blame demonstrates trustworthiness.
I believe trust is the foundation on which any positive relationship is built - either personal or professional. As a real estate agent in Melbourne, Florida, people place their trust in me everyday to work for what is in their best interest, and it is a responsibility that I do not take lightly.
