Is Green Here to Stay or Just a Fad?

Is the Greene Theme just a fad, or here to stay? We thought our clients would be interested in learning how they can live greener and have a significant amount of marketing around the green theme. So far only a very few have expressed a deep interest in going green. Most keep their green efforts to recycling the trash. Investing dollars into their property to make it greener isn't something we are seeing much of yet? However it remains a hot topic in real estate, and many of us are becoming designated as Green Agents.

We've discovered that going Green and Green Building means different things to different people. At its core is the intent to plan, design, construct, maintain, and deconstruct buildings, neighborhoods, and cities to be healthier and more comfortable places to live and work for the people on the inside, and more environmentally friendly for everyone else on the outside.

If you're used to the old school environmentalism of sweater-wearing martyrdom, this juxtaposition might seem a paradox; but the two tenets go hand in hand. It turns out that buildings that are well built do things like waste less energy and water, allow inhabitants to control temperature and humidity, grow less mold, and contain fewer toxins. Green building starts off with the premise that the inhabitants' well being, health, and comfort come first, and incorporates this idea into the design process. It then looks for ways to reduce the burden on the environment in terms of resource and land use and air and water quality.

There are now many, many publications and products dedicated to helping us all to become greener - I especially like The Daily Green.com and their section on Green Homes.

I have a builder client that has spent an enormous amount of money researching this topic, and has built some of the finest green homes in our area only to find that the price of the systems and materials involved outweigh the demand for this exceptionally high standard of building. It appears that being green comes in many different shades

Are you experiencing the same?

Making Connections that Count

The issue with going Green is the cost!!   The reason this is not catching on is that the average american home owner cannot afford to go green.   I have many clients that talk with with about alternative energy sources and about building green.....when we start to look into the cost and payback periods they all say no way!     Who wants to pay $20K to $40K with a 5 to 10 year return.      A lot of my clients don't see them being in their current homes more than 10 years...so it really does not make sense.    As the technology continues to develop I think we will see the prices drop but we are talking 20 plus years from now unless there is some major event that drives the prices down.    It is still a great concept and one that we should all be considering!

I think people often feel it's overwhelming to 'live green.' Municipalities can make it easier for people to start to change their mode of thinking by making it easy to recycle, gather compostables, rid oneself of toxic batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, etc. After a while a tipping point is reached, both on an individual level and in the community.

Baby steps.

Green will be the new black, hamburgers kill people and etc etc. When will people understand what one person finds green another finds black, one person saves another spends and the planet goes round and round.

Hi Vanessa - Interesting post. I'm not sure how much longer we'll have the luxury of choice when it comes to environmentally responsible actions. The stakes keep going up, and what is a fad today may well become a necessity in the not-too-distant future.

It's tough to go Green Vanessa - but I think it will be worth it in the long run. We need to take some of the politics out of it and educate people more the benefits, in my IMO.

Most friends who got Green degrees In college are now cleaning up environmental waste or ensuring Green standards on construction sites.
