Joan, That one snuck up on me.  Guess I need 10 rolls of penny stamps to go with all those rolls of .44 stamps!

Like Liz and Bill, it snuck up on me, wasnt' aware! Its okay since I'd still rather pay $.045 than $10-$15 UPS, etc. They need to do what they need to do to be competitive. It makes my mailing budget increase by just over 4% but, like I said, still cheaper and mostly reliable.

Joan, thanks for the tip.  I was not aware.

I would buy the Forever Stamps... but I don't know that the Post Office will be around "forever".   They are in serious financial trouble!

Hello. I work Communications for the Postal Service and just wanted to put it out there that the penny increase should be relatively seamless. ALL First Class stamps are now Forever stamps. So if you paid 44 cents for them a month ago, they will be good until you use them up. Your next purchase however will cost you an extra penny.

Most Meter machines are now automated and the rates will be picked up.

We are living with a 2006 law that requires stamps to be adjusted every January. We can only raise prices up to the CPI increase.

And also to note, UPS and FedEx both raised prices this month by about five percent too.

We are in financial problem becuase of the same 2006 law, that requires us to prefund future retiree health benefits 75 years in advance. This costs us 5.5 billion a year. Congress won't budge on this! We are also asking to go to five day delivery, saving another 3.1 billion a year.

Yes, mail volume is down, but last year we still delivered 164 billion pieces of mail. Thanks for all your support!
