Reading List: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I am happy to say that my Real Estate business keeps me fairly busy.  What I am not happy to say is that that can leave little time for one of my favorite activities: reading.

I have always been an avid reader.  In fact, I got a Master's Degree in what basically amounts to reading (it was French lit, brag, brag....).  So, it was essentially my job - for a time - to read.  footprints in the sand by the ocean

In that spirit, I joined our neighborhood book club.  I was looking for suggestions outside of my regular James Patterson/John Grisham/Dan Brown realm.  Nowadays, a book really has to grab me so I can finish it before it's due back at the library. (This is why I usually buy books instead of borrow them, but that's another post)

Which leads me to have read The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.  I admit that I am a little behind, as it was published in 2003 and has long since been made into a movie.  In fact, I had resisted it, being under the assumption that it would be contritely sappy and overly girlie.

Not so.  It is cleverly written, intelligently crafted.  It's a love story, to be sure, but it is so unconventional that it almost defies being labeled as a love story.

Henry DeTamble involuntarily travels through time due to some genetic defect, and Clare Abshire is the object of his affection.  Clare lives in natural sequential time.  It is at once hilarious and heartbreaking, frolicsome and gutwrenching.  I found the dialogue to be witty and the story to be absolutely absorbing.  I'm not going to go into too much detail at the risk of giving too much away.  I feel this book needs to be experienced by the reader themselves.

If you haven't yet done so, take the time to read this one!

Jennifer... one of my all-time favorites!  I read it back in 2003 and remember it vividly to this day. I chose not to see the movie because I've often been disappointed when the movie doesn't stay true to the book.

If you haven't yet read the Steig Larson (sp?) trilogy beginning with the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, you're missing out!

Of course you have a Masters Degree... that makes sense why I like your work. Well written, concise, info packed etc

Peggy- The film didn't interest me much when it came out, and I'm even less interested in seeing it now that I've finally read the book!  I don't think it could possibly be captured as a film...  And thank for the rec- I've read all 3 in Stieg Larsson's series- fantastic!

David- Aw shucks...!  It took me a long time and much practice to find my writing style.  That first year of the MA was brutal!

Shannon- Me too.  I love to read, but it gets too easy to get so busy that I fall asleep after about 1 page!
