"I wish to live deliberately, and not discover when I came to die...that I had not lived"
Henry David Thoreau
I like to think of the Holidays as A Time for Reflection. Reflection on what has been, what is and what will be!
WHAT HAS BEEN
Thanksgiving meant dinner at the folks. All the men -Brothers, Father and Significant Others would go to the local High School football game. All the Women -Sisters, Mother and Significant Others...set the Table and prepared the meal.
Then we would gather round the table, cajole the youngest to say Grace and proceed to indulge. Soon it was over and all headed home. Weeks of preparation...over just like that!
Christmas was much the same...but more intense. The expectations so heightened they made you want to look away. The tree and its mountain of gifts. Holding the promise of happiness...It always seemed wanting!
WHAT IS - Living Deliberately
"Family" Thanksgiving- a different composition. My Little Unit, our Longtime Friends, and whoever needs a spot. Just pull up a chair! Laughter and sharing, all will linger....not wanting to see it end. Whether here or there...I do the Turkey!
Christmas- to be celebrated wherever we want it to be. The Spirit is within- if it's swimming with Dolphins, going to Rockefeller Center or digging in at home. Neighborhood contests for the gaudiest trim. My husband really determined to win. Pajamas all morning, coffee cake, bacon and java! Just we three and occasionally a single Brother and my Widowed Father but only on occasion. Gifts of thoughtfulness...times have been lean. And my California Brother will send Harry and David.
WHAT WILL BE
This has been The Year for Change...Enormous Change. Life Altering, Endurance Testing Change. The gatherings will be smaller but they still will be...we will raise our glasses to those who have gone.
The gifts symbolic mostly and from the heart, made with loving hands....but there will still be pajamas all morning, coffee cake, bacon and java!
The preparations will be for others...to see the smiles to feel the joy and swelling of the heart. And to spend some quiet time....in Reflection...with no regrets
