The Flufftastic Fairy Says: Make the Most of Your Small Space - the Bathroom

We live in a small house, just over 1000 sq feet. It was built in the '40's and has a lot of character, that's why we love it!

We renovated our mainfloor bath after dealing with the old one for 8 years.

Here are some ideas to make your small Bathroom more efficient! (Here are some tips for your Living Room, Kitchen & Dining Room, Master Bedroom)

Paint the walls and ceiling in the same shade, that way corners and boundaries disappear.

Be sparing in your hits of colour, try not for anything too bold, it will stop the eye.

White bathrooms may seem larger, but warmer tones will feel less desolate.

A small bath can be a jewel, a glass tile wall can be stunning. Use a matching coloured grout so all you see is the sparkle!

Fabrics  in the bathroom are a necessity since it is all hard surfaces.  Roman shades or drapes can reduce the echo associated with the bathroom. Not as good for singing in the shower, but it will feel more welcoming to guests.

A ladder can be used as a towel rack for some fun!

Clear shower curtains are the best to keep the eye moving, but if you want fabric, opt for a colour similar to the walls.

Pedestal sinks can free up floor space, but then there is no storage. There are many less deep vanities out there that have storage, even if it's a shelf,  and can accommodate a beautiful vessel sink, to allow for counter space as well as a focal point of the sink.

Depending on the length of your vanity, you might be able to incorporate storage on one end, or both, by use of shelving or cupboards. Again kitchen uppers can work well, stacked on top of each other.

Pocket, sliding or bifold doors can free up a lot of space in a bathroom, or try to place the door in the middle of the wall opening so there is room behind the door for shelves or hanging hooks.

A good storage idea is kitchen top cupboards mounted to the wall, because they are only 12 inches deep and can be placed over the toilet. Our renovation included a kitchen cabinet that I recessed into the wall between studs so I didn't lose any depth, but the outside depth only appears to be 10 inches.

If you have room for a small chair in the bathroom, try for a wooden or metal, chair or stool, with a cushion. Upholstered chairs won't keep well with the moisture and are probably too bulky anyway. If you can see the floor through the back and legs it will seem to take up less room.

A bench with storage, can accommodate your clothes as well as linens for bath time.

 Cabinet sides can be used to mount towel bars.

Glass shelves above the sink won't stop the eye if you can keep them tidy. Hide toiletries, because a lot of little bottles will look cluttered.

A large mirror will make your small bathroom appear larger and can help your guests check for wardrobe malfunctions before exiting!

Good lighting is essential for a bathroom. Not only will it make the room look larger, but will help with personal grooming. Swing arm lights can help, but having the light fixture closer to face level is optimal.

Flooring and tiles can be laid at a  diagonal to cheat the floor size. A striped rug, tone on tone to not stop the eye, can make the room look wider if the stripes are parallel to the shorter wall.
