The First (?) ActiveRain Meme

The bounteous, beautiful, bubbly, blog goddess Mary McKnight posted today that she'd been "memed"

What the heck is a "meme"? We'll let Mary explain. She's good:

==============

I was memed this morning by my friend and competitor, Paul Chaney of Blogging Systems. For those of you that don’t know what a meme is: It’s a thought stream carried from one person to another, or, to be more precise, a “unit of cultural information transferable from one mind to the other,” so says Wikipedia. Basically, it’s the blogging equivalent of a chain letter.  The cool thing about blogging is that the meme can be tracked. Entire websites are devoted to doing just that. Some memes, however, are deliberate…sort of a social game to build community and engender relationships. (Jay's emphasis)

==============

Judging by the comments on Mary's post, there's a lot of us out there who think this is cool.

So why not an AR meme fest? It'd be a great way to get to know each other better.

How do you do it?

It's EASY. Email THREE Active Rainers (the easiest way is just click the "email me" link under their picture. Or go to their AR profile and click on the link by "Email") Put "YOU'VE BEEN AR MEMED!" in the subject line and copy this into the body of the email:

===========

Greetings! You've just been MEMED on Active Rain!

"WHAT?" you say? Go to this post:

http://activerain.com/blogsview/27305/The-First-ActiveRain-Meme

and make a comment telling us "What 5 Things You don’t Know About Me". OR, put it on your "other blog", but please put a link to it in the comments of the AR Meme Post (link just above here).

Then contact 3 other Active Rainers and meme them!

Just do it. It's fun!

===========

Once you pick your three meme victims, please come back to this post and put the victims names in a comment. I'll compile them as frequently as possible to avoid the same people getting memed more than once. We'll see how it goes. I'll put a post on my other blog in a couple of days, with links to those memed.

This post is "public" so keep it clean people!

UPDATED: Please post the five things about you as a comment here, or post it on your "other blog" and put a link to that in the comments here. Or make a separate AR blog post like Maureen did , and link it here. Whatever.

So, if I do a smaller, condensed version, would it be a "mini-meme?"

12/16/2006 01:46 PM by Rich Jacobson ~ ActiveRain Community Builder (ActiveRain Corporation)

Good one Rich! Check your email. You're about to be mini-memed!

12/16/2006 01:50 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

Hey, you memed 4.

Aren't you supposed to tell us 5 things about you to get the ball rolling?

12/16/2006 01:55 PM by Maureen Francis & Dmitry Koublitsky, SKBK Sotheby's - Metro Detroit (SKBK Sotheby's International Realty)

Actually Mo, I memed 6 (just to get things rolling.)

And I'll tell my five things as soon as someone memes me!

12/16/2006 01:57 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

5 things... (more details on my blog)

1.  Classically trained pianist and vocalist.

2.  Was the only (at the time) woman sales rep for Husqvarna (yes, i sold chainsaws!)

3.  Certified OSHA logging safety instructor.

4.  Paid for college by bartending.

5.  Certified USSSA umpire.

I hit up Linda Davis, Bob Pavey, Jim Lee!

12/16/2006 02:11 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

Are we supposed to post the 5 in a comment after your post or in our own blogs?

12/16/2006 02:25 PM by Sam Chapman (Keller Williams Realty)

Thanks Leigh! You don't look like a chainsaw salesperson (not that I really know what a chainsaw salesperson should look like. But I'm picturing a big guy in a flannel shirt...)

You should make an MP3 file of you playing/singing and share it with us! I'd love to hear you!

12/16/2006 02:27 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

I am doing it in my own blog with a comment link  here.

Oh, yeah, Jay, you were just tagged.

Along with Justin from CREN

and Carole Cohen

12/16/2006 02:28 PM by Maureen Francis & Dmitry Koublitsky, SKBK Sotheby's - Metro Detroit (SKBK Sotheby's International Realty)

Sam - I was thinking here, but I like Mo's idea.... on your "other blog" is fine, or as a separate AR blog, but please come back and put a link here so we can all see it!

12/16/2006 02:31 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

I had a feeling Mo would tag me...

  1. I've jumped out of a perfectly good airplane 12 times. (I *highly* recommend it!)

  2. I taught my son to play Chess when he was three. By the time he was five, I couldn't beat him. I have two chess trophies. My son has over 100, including state and national level championships.

  3. My 13 year old daughter plays piano, clarinet and flute. She doesn't know it, but she's getting a saxophone for Christmas. I can't even play a kazoo.

  4. I had a 4.0 GPA in college.

  5. My Point 2 Agent web site is ranked #1 in the world out of 103,000+ Point 2 sites (at least for the moment)
I tagged several in the beginning. The running list is in the first comment.

12/16/2006 02:52 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

I sincerely hope your 13 year old does not read AR.  Somehow I am sure she doesn't, though when I was that age I would have done anything to figure out what I was getting for xmas.

Your p2a ranking is impressive.  What is it based on?

My memette, Carole, is out showing and will be reporting in later this evening.   I have some more people I would love to tag.  Too bad I could only do 3.

12/16/2006 03:32 PM by Maureen Francis & Dmitry Koublitsky, SKBK Sotheby's - Metro Detroit (SKBK Sotheby's International Realty)

Ok...mine are here.  There will be NO chuckling. Don't click until you promise.

I have named memers George Souto, Brett Ellis and Angus Woodbury.

12/16/2006 03:43 PM by Linda Davis (RE/MAX Realty Group)

I have named Anne McDonald, Kristin Gunn & Janet Patrick...

12/16/2006 04:10 PM by Western New York Home Sales | Colleen Kulikowski (WNY Real Estate)

MAUREEN WROTE: I have some more people I would love to tag.  Too bad I could only do 3.

Heck, I've never been a big fan of rules, tag as many as you want! That goes for anyone!

My daughter is too busy yapping on the phone and sending text messages to read anything I write. Though both her an my son did "hack" my other blog once. I think the fear of friends finding out she read Dads blog is enough to keep her away. How uncool would that be?

The P2A Performance Indicator is based on "on line effectiveness", whatever that means. No one knows for sure as they keep the calculations secret -- sorta like Google's SERP algorithms. They don't want people manipulating them. It appears to be based on listings "richness" (read text and photos), extent of customization, traffic, prospect generation... stuff like that. Doesn't really mean a whole lot, but I do use it in some marketing. Sellers like to hear "We are the #1 Point 2 site in the world". And, it sounds cool. Ratings are constantly changing, so that honor could disappear any minute.

Someone needs to tag Colleen Kulikowski and David Spencer....

12/16/2006 05:02 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

I am naming:

Kristal Kraft, Ann Cummings & Elaine Reese

1. I got my first real job at the age of 11 delivering Chinese food for a Rush street restaurant by bicycle (including in the snow) I always had a job after that.

2. While I was an only child for most of my life, I did get to spend a short period of time in a well to do family when my Mother married my best friends father (whose family owned a chain of hotels).... Unfortunately, shortly after that he was no longer my best friend... I moved out of the house 1 month after my 17th birthday. It's a good thing I was still working.

3. I have a fear of speaking in groups and frequently can get tongue tied... this would not normally be too bad but I will occasionally sit on panels or make presentations to large groups... it's gone from a major near-heart attack kind of overwhelming fear to a simple heart racing dumbstruck kind of fear. Some of you have been able to witness this... usually I muddle through.

4. I love to read. I'll read the self help books and how to's... but I really love to read novels... lot's of them, 1-2 per week... usually intrigue, mystery, action, political/legal/financial thrillers... in my younger, less busy days... I would read a book every 1-2 days.

5. At the age of 9, Bobby Schuller broke off pieces of chalk in the locker doors (where you could put a lock, if we were allowed) in the Hall at my elementary school... then told my fourth grade teacher (Mrs Falbo) that I did it. I had just (finally) earned the right to be a "door guard" and she took it away from me. I haven't trusted authority since. (not that I hold a grudge or anything)

Moo

12/16/2006 05:20 PM by Angus in Naperville IL (RE/MAX Affiliates)

I blogged on my blog.... but no fair... I just tagged Elaine too...  I think Elaine needs to pass one of her two on because I am supposed to out to dinner shortly and I have to dress... or is that not fair?  Jay make an executive decision...

12/16/2006 05:26 PM by Maureen McCabe - Central Ohio real estate (Real Living HER)

Ok, I am going to add my 'stuff right to this blog post. Here goes:

1. When I was 11 I was the Secretary of the Vic Davalillo Fan Club. #25, centerfield, Cleveland Indians lol. I still remember his birthdate (July 31st). I was in charge that year of baking the cake; which I had never done; and I folded in the first third of the flour and forgot the last 2/3.  Luckily my mother made one quickly lolol.

2. I played the violin. I had perfect pitch so I hated how I sounded : -)  It's not like riding a bike, so I finally donated my violin to a music school a few years ago.

3. Took my first trip to England after High School; we did a summer program at Durham University. It was like dying and going to heaven. I won a debate (the total subject escapes me it was uh, a few years ago), but it was something about Parliamentary Government versus our own Three Branches. I lucked out and was chosen to represent the Brit side; my prize was a glass bottomed pewter mug and a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale.

4. I attended the first Farm Aid Concert in 1984 in Springfield Illinois. A friend had back stage passes which I 'borrowed ' for a few hours until they caught me. I was up on stage when Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson sat in front of me talking to each other like old friends. Now, these are two of my favorites, and I couldn't even get up the nerve to talk to them, even when they smiled at me (well, Dylan ALMOST smiled, you know how he is). lolol  Well what was I going to say? Hi, you guys are awesome? Like they never heard THAT before.

5. Not sure I have completely given up this dream yet, even at my age, but always wanted to own a baseball team; it just sounds like so much fun. And now that I think about it, if 'W' could do it, why not me?

I am tagging:

Brian Brady

Monika McGilicuddy

Michele Connor

12/16/2006 05:43 PM by Carole Cohen (Howard Hanna Cleveland City Office)

Far be it for me to mess with a woman dressing for dinner! Elaine can either pass on her extra tag or give us TEN things about her. Or just ignore it. Whatever she feels like doing with it..

12/16/2006 05:45 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

i added Marci Toliver since she was silly enough to say she was glad no one else had tagged her! =)  Marci, I look forward to your 5 things!

12/16/2006 06:17 PM by Leigh Brown Charlotte NC Broker/Owner (RE/MAX Signature Properties)

This pic is for Carole...

Did you ever see the movie Pat Garrett  & Billy the Kid? I think it's the only movie that had BOTH Dylan and Kristofferson in it. It's a great movie!

12/16/2006 07:05 PM by Jay & Francy Thompson (Thompson's Realty)

now how did we leave TLH (Broker Bryant) off the tag list?  got him!

12/16/2006 07:27 PM by Leigh Brown Charlotte NC Broker/Owner (RE/MAX Signature Properties)

OMG you found Vic ! LOLOL  1963 rookie year; how fun thank you! LOL  Yes I did, I have seen that movie two times.  I may have to check out your link anyway!   PS: My best friend Connie was in NYC once and I think on the subway, and overheard someone talking about Vic and she had to butt in.....she said it was my fault they thought she was nuts lmao   TY Jay : - )

1. Served onboard a submarine in the Navy.

2. Attended a Christian college in Hawaii and served as Youth Pastor for 1st Baptist Church of Honolulu.

3. Play guitar, congas & bongos, and write songs.

4. Serve on the Board of Directors for our local community theater.

For Maureen:

  1. I'm really a shy person that tries very hard to compensate for this.
  2. I've traveled to most of the 48 states - thanks to my previous company.
  3. Like Leigh, I was the 1st woman to obtain a marketing mgmt position in a male-dominated industry. (Maybe we were at McCormick Place in August at the same time some year.)

  5. I used to be a Susie Homemaker when married. Sewed all my family's clothes. Kept the house really clean and baked several loaves of bread each week.

 For Angus:

  1. Took golf as a phys-ed course at OSU. Hit husband in the head with my driver - at the END of the swing. Broke his face, but got an 'A' in the course anyway. Signed up for Riflery the next quarter. We got a dissolution a few years later. Wonder why????
  2. Nearly killed Sasquatch when driving home one night from my daughter's home in the country.
  3. Have gotten out of speeding tickets by crying.
  4. My first car in high school was an old WWII jeep that I painted hot pink and put porta-walls on to make it look 'really, really cool'.
  5. Have had dogs ALL my life ... OK, OK ... that doesn't surprise anyone! But I needed just one more.

LTW ( I mean TLW)

Jay, I sent Jason Price an email through AR but it came back : - (   I may go find a post of his and notify him that way.....

12/16/2006 10:50 PM by Carole Cohen (Howard Hanna Cleveland City Office)

Jay needs to update his list before he goes to bed. It's only 9:00 pm there! Carole, you and I need to go to bed because it's midnight here! Don't have a photo of the pink jeep. Even if I did it would be so old, Craig S would have to do some serious work on it.

I want to protest. We were supposed to put up things that others wouldn't know. Broker Bryant's #3 doesn't qualify. He needs to come up with one more.

12/16/2006 11:00 PM by Elaine Reese, REALTOR® in central Ohio (Real Living HER, Worthington Ohio)

ROFLMAO  I had to scroll up and read #3 omg yer killin ME Elaine.  Ok ok, I will go to bed; I was waiting for Angus to post his five thingys.  Oh well,  I will read them tomorrow

12/16/2006 11:03 PM by Carole Cohen (Howard Hanna Cleveland City Office)

LOL Guys - I have been tagged three times.  I posted twice, How many times are we to tell??

I have my first tag here and the second here.  I am done for the night.

BTW - I was trying to get all the tags in my review - holy batman... I can not do everyones tags or else everyone will be reading all through the holdiay.  Listen, I have a ton of stuff on my review - too much I think - but it is my review and I can do wahtever I want.  LOL.  I want comments - comments - comments.  I spent a lot of time on this and I am now seeing cross eyed!

12/16/2006 11:08 PM by Christine

LOL OK Christine, I will go review your review. But first, Angus has been here all the time and I was too cross eyed to see lol

Angus I love your list; my best friend is a mystery writer; I'll send you one of her books. Have you 'run into' Bobby since the chalk incident? I think a prank is in order lol  I'm an only child too; but it sounds like neither of us were spoiled ones : - )

12/16/2006 11:39 PM by Carole Cohen (Howard Hanna Cleveland City Office)

O.K... here are my five, also posted on my other blog:
1).  I was an orphan at the age of 12. Mother hit by a car as pedestrian when I was 7.  Father died of cancer when I was 12.
2)   I won a National Grange sewing contest at the age of 14 (55,000 entrants)
3)   I have traveled to many foreign countries (Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Israel, Germany, Austria, Italy, England, Wales, Australia, and Canada where my husband was born and raised).
4)  My lifelong fantasy has been to take a road trip across the U.S.
5)  I became a wife, step-mother to 5 and grandmother all in the same "I Do" in 1983.

Any questions?

(I'm working on my tags)

Oh yeah, I should say that I edited my comments above to include my list... (so Jay can mark me done!)

Carole - I hear that Bobby is no longer with us... he was a person with "issues" and they killed him. So I have been robbed of this opportunity... I like pranks and am not afraid to escalate.  :)

Jay & Francy, I know this must be unreal to try and take care of but I thought I would just share with you that the list that you have above sometimes has DONE and it makes some of us think that it means that those names have been tagged. But I noticed that there are a lot of names on the list that don't show DONE even though they have already been selected and tagged. Just a little confusing and possibly meaning that a person is tagged more than once, twice, etc.

Jay - this was SO MUCH FUN!!  I love reading all these things about the people we've been conversing here with on Active Rain.  And I'm glad some people have linked their MEME posts here - it makes it alot easier to find those posts, if the 5 things were written here in their comments.  Great fun!

Here's mine, in case it was missed - MEMED!!

Thanks Jay for bringing this to AR, and to Moo, who memed me!  Now, I'm waiting for those I tagged to get their 5 things together to share with all of us....... come on, you know who you are!!

Jay - This was great fun!   Here is the power of Active Rain - I talked about Clay Aiken in my MEME.  Somehow it appeared as a Google Alert and a couple "Claymates" have stopped by and posted.  How cool is that???

Linda - that is SO cool!!!  I think the public is finding us here on AR alot more than some people think!  I did a post on Wreaths Across America, where i mentioned the Patriot Guard Riders, and a member of the Mississippi Patriot Guard Riders found my post on Google and stopped by my post and left a great comment.

Gotta love the power of Active Rain for sure!!

  1. Christopher Smith
  2. Christopher Smith (didn't want either to feel left out!)
  3. Leanne Paynter

The five things

  1. I've been a surgical transcriptionist at Georgetown University in DC for 12 years.
  2. I told my husband when we started going together that I was very shy. He pulled my string and I haven't been quiet since!
  3. I do feel shy until I know them and don't love public speaking (which is why I could never be a real estate professional).
  4. I can play chess (I only mention that because my husband just found out yesterday). That reminds me: We just saw a chess game yesterday which has the moves on the pieces, for those of you who want to learn!
  5. I'm a proud mom 'n' grandmother.
