 Seven Fire Safety Tips

Recently, several home fires have made the National News. There are fFire Safetyew things more tragic than homes and lives destroyed by fire. Unfortunately, many of the conditions that cause house fires can be prevented or avoided by the homeowners.

Taking a few precautions can save lives and your possessions.

1. Wood burning fireplaces should be professionally cleaned and inspected each year. The build up of Creosote can be very dangerous and can cause a flash fire in the chimney.

2. Check all the cords and plugs on electrical appliances and equipment for fraying or exposed wires.

3. Space heaters should not be left unattended. They should be place away from curtains, bedding, papers or anything flammable.

Fire Safety4. 60% of the fatalities from home fires occur in homes with either no smoke detectors or non-working detectors. Even Smoke Detectors that are hard-wired to y our homes electrical system need to have fresh backup batteries. Batteries should be replace at least yearly, if not twice each year.

5. Candles should be never be left unattended. They should be placed in appropriate holders away from curtains and other flammable objects.

6. Kitchen fires are one of the most common types of fires and they happen all year long. Many are caused by unattended grease spills on the stove or in the oven. Other causes are loose clothing hanging near a flame.

Finally, have an escape plan. This is the one thing that you can do to make sure that no one gets hurt.

Connie this a a excellent post.  A home close to our neighbor hood was totally lost by fire just last week. Thankfully nobody was hurt. There have been so many tragedies by fire this year. Reblogged!

Connie- we can never be reminded enough about fire safety.  And I do think we can become too complacent about our smoke alarms.

Great reminder for everyone.  I would personally move #4 all the way to the top.  Smoke and fire detectors absolutely save lives.  Check them regularly and change the batteries twice a year(every time you move your clock forward or back is a great time).

My Son had fire safety month at school recently. He is the one that made us really think about this and our escape route.

Connie, when I was young living near Hendersonville, I remember the night of ROY ORBISON's home caught fire.  Two kids were playing with hair spray and matches and I think a maid died along with the two children.

Anna - Thanks for the feature. I think what made me think about this was the family in New England somewhere who lost their kids and parents. Horrible!

Kathy - I agree totally!

Brint - Thank you.

Jim - By doing it when you change the clocks, it becomes a habit. I agree!

Christine - You don't even need to own. Renters seem to be more vulnerable than homeowners!

Ellie - It should be taught in school so the kids learn to participate. Especially with the escape plan.

Bruce - I wasn't living here then, but I was when Johnny Cash's house burned up there in the same area.

Conrad - I hate it when homeowners leave them lit for showings. I blow them out too.
